Blight and Beauty in Grays Ferry
[previous] :: [next]
A few blight / graffiti shots taken around Grays Ferry, a blue-collar neighborhood in South Philly just Southwest of Center City. In recent years it has been the scene of much racial tension, as long-time Irish Catholic residents clash with African Americans from neighboring Point Breeze east of 25th Street and the Tasker Homes Projects to the south. Tensions peaked in 1997, when Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan joined marchers to protest racial violence. Today Grays Ferry is experiencing much of the symptoms of urban blight.
