One of the greatest of the , connecting , and the over Randall's/Ward's Island

image 32466
Built by in 1937, it was the first bridge designed for motorcars.

image 32467
But Pedestrians were also an integral aspect of this bridge's design.

image 32469
You really feel that on two wheels.

image 32468
But the ramp is like a prize for getting over to Randall's Island!

Do it soon! Riding weather is here!

awesome! the bike-troughs on the stairs are great and unbelievably impractical, as long as your bike is of carrying-weight. lol.

the relief map in the second shot is great, too... now i wanna do this ride!

Well, once you get there you can look forward to getting off Randall's Island on the footbridge!

Peter: more like bunny-hop it on my bike!

hey now, don't you mean the RFK bridge? i used to take the bus over this bridge every day - there was a lot of construction going on and it was hard to tell exactly where the pedestrian walk ended. it also always seemed like kind of a pain that the path didn't continue into manhattan and the bronx.
interesting you should mention that pedestrians were considered in the design.. one of Lewis Mumford's chief complaints about the bridge was that "The designers so despised the whole notion of walking that they have not even had the grace or the good manners to provide benches, where one might rest and take in the view."

CartLegger: 16th Apr 2009 - 18:18 GMT

point taken, on both counts. i was so excited about it, I missed considering the controversial name change--RFK would roll over in his grave to have such an auto-centric bridge named after him!
