Shadow of Del Mar

- JoeyD - Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 : goo

Inspired by Joey’s Del Mar Theater post, I went back into my archives and found some photos taken around the general area of the Del Mar.

The Del Mar Theater is located on Pacific Ave in Santa Cruz CA. That area of pacific ave is known as “Pacific Garden Mall” or locally just as “The Mall”.

“The Mall” has long been the cultural center of the city. No summer trip to the Santa Cruz beach would be complete without a stroll on “The Mall” if diversity is your thing.
Before the 1989 Loma Prieta earth quake, Pacific “garden mall” really Lived up to its name. there were brick lined planters arching over the streets and flowers were everywhere.

October 17th 1989 ravaged the mall and changed its look forever as well as having cost several good people on the street their lives. I will save that story for another time however.

Everyone has their story on the mall, we start with one of the more famous. Mr. Twister. ( the drug crazed clown). Mr Twister, a local hero used to watch the meter maids tool around in their golf carts, he had a habit of dropping quarters into the parking meters just as an officer would get out his ticket book. A court eventually ruled in Mr. Twisters’ favor.

The rest of the photos have their stories too… If you ever find yourself in Santa Cruz on a summer evening, join the lost boys for a few hours and see what you can discover.
