is the back door to the city, leading in from Long Island Sound into the East River. It is spanned by the and . It is most probably named for its tumultuous tides...

"The confluence of Long Island Sound/The East River & The Harlem River at Randalls Island has long been a incredibly turbulent waterway when the tides are running. While easy to navigate at slack tides, even for people in Kayaks, currents up to 5-10 knots are not unusual when the tide floods back in from New York Harbor & The Atlantic or when the tide flows out from The Long Island Sound. Each year there are still numerous accidents and small wrecks in this dangerous stretch of water"

Hell gate: When the Dutch first arrived the Algonquin Indians already living here called their paradise 'Manna-Hatta meaning 'Island of the Hills.' The Dutch penetrated into the Yorkville region and established one of their farms (bouweries) on 74th Street and the East River (actually an estuary) near a little rushing stream. The land was filled with such beauty that they called it 'Hellegat' the Dutch word for 'beautiful pass.' Years later the word would become anglicized to 'Hell Gate' to describe the treacherous East River currents.

CartLegger: 16th Apr 2009 - 10:39 GMT

Yes, and Manahatta might have meant "place of general inebriation".

that's the great thing about NYC history: its a multiple choice question with multiple answers.

But you do bring a up a very good point: Manahatta!!!!! One of the best books out on NYC in years is the place to learn more about what our urban environment used to be like:
