Amazing Bike Trail
Browsing articles by Sean Hopkins - [previous] :: [next]Just blocks from my house in Bayside, Queens, lies Cunningham Trail. I discovered it a few years back & it quickly became a gem of a hangout. It was/is a great place to venture off with friends, bring a bottle of wine, (or several) swing from vines, or take a stroll by yourself. There have been times when I brought my Djembe or my guitar and jammed just because it's so isolated. In recent times it's become a hot spot for mountain bikers and over the last couple of years they've really turned it into the dopest bike trail I've ever seen.
I saw some kids shoveling and shaping some dirt jump ramps.
This bridge here goes over the Long Island Expressway near the 73rd Avenue exit. Not too long ago it was littered with broken glass and empty beer cans. I ran into a guy who was cleaning it up with some kids and he said he was with "CLIMB"~~Concerned Long Island Mountain Bikers [[www.climbonline.com]] It's nice to see that this place is improving through the concern and effort of people who see it's potential. (Cue the big "screw you" to the Parks Dept.)
So if you're interested I highly recommend checking it out. It's right off the Long Island Expressway, heading eastbound from Manhattan get off at the Francis Lewis Blvd exit and take the service road to Oceania Street. There are two entrances from the corner of the Horace Harding Expressway and Oceania St, and after making a right onto Oceania. Coming from Long Island, take the LIE to the Oceania Street exit and make a left onto Oceania. It's a great trail but proceed with caution, some of it looks pretty intense.

Just want to let everyone know that any trail work in Cunningham Park needs to be approved. Those "kids" in the pix are part of the "dirty thursday work crew" 3pm till dark every Thursday we clean up and maintain the trails. We worked with NYC Parks to develop the trail system and we help keep the place clean. To find out how you can volunteer, go to www.CLIMBonline.org . Hopefully more people will pitch in to help clean up the never ending stream of trash. Hopefully we can convince people not to leave trash or break bottles in there because they ruin the outdoor experience for everyone if the place is littered. We are a non profit and are member supported, all our member funds go towards building trails and maintaining them. Check out the BMX exhibit and jump jam at the Queens Museum of Art on April 26th On May 16th we are offering guided rides and free demo bikes from 9am till 1pm. Meet at the official trail head on 210th St and 67th Ave (just down from Oceania). The trails at Cunningham Park are the real deal...make sure you wear a helmet!
Paul U: 14th Apr 2009 - 23:03 GMTWe as kids from Fresh meadows rode our dirt bikes there for years (mid 1970's), was a very old dried up lake bed with lots of sand. Rat infested, we would see trees totally covered with rats. Great place to cut school, always filled with kids from st francis prep on a friday after school parting. Sean Hopkins: 3rd May 2009 - 22:26 GMTI just want to make a correction here. In reference to the location of the bridge, I mentioned it was the 73rd Ave exit on the LIE. I meant to say the Clearview Expressway. Had a little brain fart there. tS: 3rd May 2010 - 23:32 GMTdo are there any motorcross tracks there? or if not does anyone know where there might be some in NYC ? Envepsyestatt: 7th Aug 2011 - 02:44 GMTAs I schedule crew for the control towers at both Daytona and Sebring, perhaps you'd be interested in working with us in 2004 (Jan 31-Feb 1 Envepsyestatt: 8th Aug 2011 - 12:55 GMTThanks for that.
