Wow, these remind me of some of the shanties I saw in Jamaica. They're too colorful and artfully assembled to be put together by the local crack-head. I wonder what their story is? Any idea why they were "abandoned"?

good find peter, i remember the shanty village along the belt parkway where they built projects and now a large mall complex near pennsylvania avenue. well it was hooverville. there were at least a couple of hundred people living in that swamp. i would look out the passenger side window of my dad's 42 pontiac as we were driving back to brooklyn from queens and see the people and their little shanty homes and fires in front for cooking. very sad.

New York has been home to sqatters for generations, and I think a shanty village like that is a testament to human ingenuity. In my neighborhood in the early 90s, a "tent city" called Dinkinsville (after then-mayor David Dinkins) sprang up in Tompkins Square Park and lasted several months before cops descended on it and destroyed and disposed of all tents and personal belongings. That's called "living on the edge," and is barely a step up from living on the street.

There is a floating shanty town in Olympia, WA called Camp Quixote. They tried to take over public parking lots in downtown Oly, but kept getting kicked out. They have been relocating from church to church in town since.

i know in the 80's that area was infested with drug addicts and prostitutes and they made little huts all around the flushing ave area. many from that area are all gone.
