Hunters Point, NY

For $10 and a long wait in line, you can enjoy a watered down drink at the over-crowded Water Taxi beach.

But such simple kicks, ignore the real life, real history of Hunters Point, NY
big version @ upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/LIRR_1891_Long_Island_City.jpg

image 31776
Hunters Point was a bustling 19th century industrial area, surging in after Civil War in the same economic boom that led to the development of its Newtown Creek, its neighbor.
image 31772

As it was so close to Manhattan, train transport (by tunnel and ferry) was a major part of the infrstructure. Like Gantry Point Park to its north, tts mostly still there, awaiting some intervention. Its been waiting a while.

image 31779
that intervention will come soon. Mayor Bloomberg wanted to see this area turned into the Olympic village for the 2012 Olympics. Glad that one missed us...

image 31777
But people want to enjoy these views. So the city is now trying to develop this area--with some trouble.

i hope it takes a while, and the some few areas of the city can still enjoy the rusty hue of benign neglect for a bit longer, before the developers move in.

I'll be back!

Graz: Mmmmmm, rusty mechanical goodness!

Anon: 24th Mar 2009 - 20:15 GMT

Great photos! There should be laws to preserve vital open spaces like this in the city! We can't let it all be built up into condos--even cheap ones!

Keep the rust! Let it all go bust!
