English Kills Decay
[previous] :: [next]
Just a few more from English Kills, one of my favorite spots to hang out in Bushwick, Brooklyn... This article has been viewed 1636 times in the last 22 months
anon (c-76-116-114-72.hsd1.pa.comcast.net): 3rd Mar 2009 - 01:48 GMTWish I still had the pictures of the old Schaefer Brewery near Flushing where Bushwick splits. Have you walked (during the day) past Knickerbocker and Dekalb? L train between Morgan and Dekalb; that stretch was very lonely, sad, and enticing. All factory districts there. I used to walk around these areas; they felt like home. Not very safe, though. Bernard: 3rd Mar 2009 - 19:05 GMTI can relate to what anon says about the area feeling that way. That's how I feel about the stretch along Greenpoint Avenue between blissville and greenpoint. Peter: 3rd Mar 2009 - 19:50 GMTahh, the nebulous "its not very safe" comment. do consider some context; as the area is comprised of partially abandoned freight lines, abandoned/decaying warehouses, business-hours-only industry and empty lots strewn with trash, what do you expect? armed guards? a neighborhood-watch patrol? ironically, ive seen several cops in this rail-cut, and on several occasions... so im going to have to disagree with you about the safety of the area. and if you think the surrounding area isnt safe, then you should get on the phone and tell the geniuses at the 83rd Precinct (718-574-1605) that they should consider deprioritizing graffiti stake-outs and instead use that manpower (and all those overtime dollars) on something more meaningful- like neighborhood foot-patrols- to ensure "public safety" (whatever that means nowadays) to citizens going about their every-day business within the realm of general public space. as for those of us who choose to enter and hang out in the cut, well, you are responsible for your own safety when venturing into non-public areas full of decay, crime, trains, vagrants, filth, art and the detritus of the surrounding neighborhood... if you're the type who is overly vigilant about your "safety", or the type who is sensitive to vague, unrealistic fearmongering, then by all means, use your common sense and stay out of the cut.
