Cyclone Ellie
[previous] :: [next]The recent cyclone Ellie created flood waters that many locals had never seen the likes of before and, coupled with a seasonal king tide, set new records for flooding and rainfall in North Queensland. The small township of Ingham, one hour north of here was completely isolated for about a week, enduring two thorough drenchings within a week, causing mass evacuation as lower levels of housing disappeared completely beneath the waters. These are photos I took during a lull in the wind and rain about a week ago in Townsville. The setting is a short ride from where I live, taken from the banks of Ross River, the main watercourse through the city.
On Monday 9 February 2009, we had received rain every day since Christmas day. That's well past the biblical forty days and forty nights. Brave of you to be taking them, lucky to not get washed away. Mime: 11th Feb 2009 - 03:41 GMTExhilarating as these shots look, I was actually quite safe the whole time. Boring, yes, but ensuring I live to snap away another day. Peter: 11th Feb 2009 - 06:13 GMTi really love that third photo. glad you survived to post these ;) lets see more townsville! Mime: 21st Feb 2009 - 10:34 GMTWe need some signage like in this article. People still fish off these weirs, not in this sort of torrent, but when the water has subsided some, people still risk walking across the weirs in knee-deep waters. If you've ever stood at the water's edge when the tide is coming in, you realize the power that even a little wash of water has. People flout warnings like it's their personal right to be swept away and then require assistance due to their ignorance from emergency crews who have genuine emergencies to respond to. Oh, I'm ranting again. Dear me...
