Remnants of Old New York
[previous] :: [next]the little building in the middle is 130 cedar street. i worked there starting in june 1961. the big grey building at right had the cedar coffee shop on the ground floor. had the best cheese burgers in manhattan. where the fence with the crane jutting up is where st. josephs rc church was and next to it was st. nicholas church. every january they would walk over to the docks which was on the other side of west side highway and they would throw a cross into the hudson and a brave soul would dive into the freezing waters to retrieve it. where that school bus is was a small clam bar and you could see hundreds of people there eating clams and oysters on the half shell standing on the sidewalk as traffic passed by on the street beneath west side highway. on the corner was a greasy spoon diner with probably the worst coffee in the world but the cutest italian immigrant girl working there. i used to buy a cup of dishwater and flirt in italian with the beauty and then leave and throw the coffee in the trash. around the corner was the radio market. radio components all over the sidewalks. i remember it well. i worked for the appeal printing company on the fifth floor. all gone now.

I guess its just a personal truth, "old new york" For me, "old new york" had Twin Towers and affordable rent! Jamie: 3rd Feb 2009 - 09:33 GMTbut surely, if you're gonna get all semantic about it, 'Old New York' = 'York' ;-) jack: 3rd Feb 2009 - 14:21 GMTvery true. i made an error, i started working there in june, 1960 and i remember the old new york of those day's. sure, there is an older new york from the 1700's but i wasn't there then. or was i? i remember many older people in their 70's in 1960 who remembered new york when they were kids and they always remarked how much things changed. remember, THINGS CHANGE. to each generation, their times were the important times and their times were the best of times. eventually, their times will be the old times. jack: 3rd Feb 2009 - 14:34 GMTby the way they are going to convert that building which was a 12 story printing plant into a 19 story hotel with retail stores. so things change. Peter: 3rd Feb 2009 - 21:12 GMTeven old new york was once new amsterdam adam: 3rd Feb 2009 - 21:32 GMTi cant wait till it becomes new jack city and we have to watch out for emilio estivez and his shenanigans Peter: 3rd Feb 2009 - 22:26 GMTyeah, we takin over the carter. we gonna bum rush the whole damn thing. now if the tenants cooperate, oh, itll be lovely. theyll be loyal customers. if not, fuck it. itll be like beirut, theyll be live-in hostages... joey: 6th Feb 2009 - 22:40 GMTin the cyberpunk future, when the rocket fire from new jersey rains down on the west side highway
