Remnants of Old New York

the little building in the middle is 130 cedar street. i worked there starting in june 1961. the big grey building at right had the cedar coffee shop on the ground floor. had the best cheese burgers in manhattan. where the fence with the crane jutting up is where st. josephs rc church was and next to it was st. nicholas church. every january they would walk over to the docks which was on the other side of west side highway and they would throw a cross into the hudson and a brave soul would dive into the freezing waters to retrieve it. where that school bus is was a small clam bar and you could see hundreds of people there eating clams and oysters on the half shell standing on the sidewalk as traffic passed by on the street beneath west side highway. on the corner was a greasy spoon diner with probably the worst coffee in the world but the cutest italian immigrant girl working there. i used to buy a cup of dishwater and flirt in italian with the beauty and then leave and throw the coffee in the trash. around the corner was the radio market. radio components all over the sidewalks. i remember it well. i worked for the appeal printing company on the fifth floor. all gone now.

Now when you say old new york, well, I am always chasing that term down, trying to find the dust under the dust under which it lies.

for example, when this building was going up, its construction was seen as trampling "old new york", the 19th century squat buildings that were cleared, which cleared 18th century buildings in turn, and such and such.

I guess its just a personal truth, "old new york"

For me, "old new york" had Twin Towers and affordable rent!

but surely, if you're gonna get all semantic about it, '' = '' ;-)

jack: 3rd Feb 2009 - 14:21 GMT

very true. i made an error, i started working there in june, 1960 and i remember the old new york of those day's. sure, there is an older new york from the 1700's but i wasn't there then. or was i? i remember many older people in their 70's in 1960 who remembered new york when they were kids and they always remarked how much things changed. remember, THINGS CHANGE. to each generation, their times were the important times and their times were the best of times. eventually, their times will be the old times.

by the way they are going to convert that building which was a 12 story printing plant into a 19 story hotel with retail stores. so things change.
