Two weeks ago, I was on the 3 train out in the wasteland.
I was wearing a sanitation hat. As soon as I got on the
train, a well-dressed guy leapt from his seat and gesticulated wildly
and happily at my hat and shouted to the train:

"SEE THAT SYMBOL, PEOPLE?! ON THE CORNER OF EVERY STREET
IN THE CITY IS A RECEPTACLE BEARING THAT SYMBOL. IF YOU ARE
EVER IN TROUBLE, RUN TO ONE OF THESE AND LIFT IT! THEY ARE
HEAVY BUT HEAVE HARD! IT IS YOUR BEACON, YOUR PORTAL. YOUR
WORMHOLE TO THE SAFE, PERFECT WORLD OF THE FUTURE! THIS MAN
KNOWS! REGARD HIS SYMBOL, PEOPLE! IT IS YOUR SAFETY, YOUR
HAVEN, THE EYE OF YOUR LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!"

And then he sat down quietly and eyed me wildly and excitedly,
knowingly; grinning eye to eye, nodding
furiously, sweating profusely and giving me two-thumbs-up
all the way from Utica to New Lots.
