The Death Of A Giant

I thought this would be a sort of poignant image (for people in the UK any way). For those that don't know, Woolworths is a department store that's been around since the early 1900's. So it's understandable that it's been a bit of an institution for some people in the UK. Growing up there was a "Woolies" in the next town, so as a kid I always used to get my "pick 'n' mix" along with food, drink, games, toys, the list goes on… At the end of December 2008 Woolworths went into administration & stopped trading, this caused 27,000 job to be lost across the UK. This broken sign is the only trace left (in the town that I work) of the once great "Woolies" Empire! It somehow seems silly to feel sentimental about what is (was) essentially just a publicly traded company, but Woolworths was an institution and I can't help but feel a little sad about it's demise. Peter: 15th Jan 2009 - 00:31 GMTF. W. Woolworth Company here's one i spotted in my hood this past autumn:
joey: 19th Jan 2009 - 04:19 GMTwhat about the woolworth building in downtown nyc. it's still there is it not ? Harry: 19th Jan 2009 - 15:25 GMTThe building was owned by the Woolworth company for 85 years until 1998 when it was sold to the Witkoff Group for $155 million. Peter: 20th Jan 2009 - 20:57 GMTjoey: this building? yes, of course its still there :) its just not the woolworth's headquarters anymore. Mark: 30th Mar 2009 - 15:05 GMTLove the image. Not sure what happened to the sign, as the damage only happened after it was announced it was closing 2curious: 25th Apr 2009 - 01:26 GMTAnyone out there remember "the drink you eat with a spoon?" It cost 10cents, and you got it at the counter. It came in a long thin glass with a long spoon in it. Does anyone know the ingredients? Woolworths- 86th and 87th sts., on Third Ave. Kath: 26th Jul 2009 - 04:21 GMT2curious: Finally! Someone else remembers that "drink you eat with a spoon." I used to buy them at a counter in the lower level of A & S on Fulton Street, Brooklyn. You could have strawberry or chocolate topping added to the delicious thick creamy white ice-cream-like stuff. It was served in a tall glass with a long steel spoon. I seem to recall that they cost 15 cents, but maybe it was only 10. I have never been able to find the same taste and consistency anywhere. I, too, would love to get a recipe. I'll bet I haven't had one of these since around 1959 . . . far too long. brevere: 31st Aug 2009 - 01:38 GMTI wish I could remember the name of Woolworths "drink so thick you eat it with a spoon, but I know for a fact what it was made from. It was a 2% ice milk with a lot of air, but not churned as hard as today's soft-serve ice cream that is the same 2% ice milk (called low-fat ice cream).
