One man's glitch is another man's impossible photo. How's you manage this?

Steve the Pocket: 6th Jan 2009 - 04:56 GMT

My guess is that the train was moving, and that the camera picks up the image one line at a time, and fairly slowly? Because the structure right in front of the train is perfectly straight.

Peter: 6th Jan 2009 - 05:02 GMT

exactly. its due to the slight delay as the image is sensed by the ccd. its starts recording at the top left and scans downward, line by line, til it reaches the bottom right. add a speeding subway, and voila... a surprisingly clean (if not entirely expected) warped photo, where the unmoving objects remain unchanged. i got a new phone, and this built-in cam is really different than other phones ive had. i guess if i were shooting film, this would have turned out as a blur.

Jamie: 6th Jan 2009 - 19:18 GMT

Hah! reminds me of my old toycam.. it used to scan the same way and made for some very odd photographs

Buck Lovell: 6th Jan 2009 - 19:48 GMT

Large and medium format older cameras with focal plane shutters running vertically would generate this effect with fast moving objects moving at 90 degrees to the film plane.

groovehouse: Wow! Italicized train!

Tyfoid Kid: 8th Jan 2009 - 14:23 GMT

Super Cool!! Someone could spend quite a bit of time in Photoshop coming up with this affect. So as far as the camera phone goes this would be "working as designed."

ai: this probably was shot usin iPhone camera

Peter: indeed, it was.
