Brooklyn Navy Yard Cogeneration Facility

While reading about this plant, I discovered that it is not only touted for "industry-leading environmental performance", but is also ranked highest on the list of facilities in Brooklyn releasing toxic materials into the air. Scorecard, a generally dependable site for a wide range of release, is way off here. They are listing Brooklyn Co-Gen--the Navy Yard plant--at the top, with a whopping 52lbs of emissions! Now, I don't know what TRI (Toxic Release inventory) chemicals they are including in this catch all category, but its hardly the whole picture. If you look on the EPA's own handy Google Earth Tool www.epa.gov/air/emissions/where.htm Finally, if you look at those others power plants, you'll see they greatly outrank Brooklyn Co-Gen, not only Nitrogen Oxide--which they put out a lot of there--but in Sulfur Dioxide, and particulates. thats the makings of acid rain. That is what is not coming out of Brooklyn Co-Gen. So yes, the PR crap from them is a bit infuriating. But that does not mean that critics are always right. And you are wrong on many, many, levels here. And yes, in the interest of disclosure, I work for the Navy Yard.
But emissions are usually Peter: 30th Sep 2008 - 15:58 GMTheh, i had a feeling that if i posted this, you might explain what was up, and voila :) thanks! Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
