Ghosts of 19123
[previous] :: [next]In the shadow of an obsolete viaduct, a few remaining blocks of abandoned or marginally utilized warehouses await their reincarnation as $300k studio lofts. Wherever too few people venture, the city dreams up its own presences instead, bringing to life archetypes from the fabric of its collective memory. Its blocks and its walls become the chapters and the pages of a one-of-a-kind comic book where, just like in life, there is no real plot but plenty of fascinating characters.
One block to the south, and you're here. This article has been viewed 2992 times in the last 3 years Mad Jane: 3rd Apr 2005 - 14:57 GMTWhenever I pass the wall in your first photo, I experience a strange combination of anxiety and joy. That whole area between Chinatown and Spring Garden st. fascinates me. vz: 4th Apr 2005 - 00:17 GMTThis part of the city seems to attract me for some reason, despite the fact that I'm a good two miles away-- for now I'm over at International House on 37th and Chestnut. After next month, I don't know yet. Mad Jane: 10th Apr 2005 - 22:30 GMTI know what you mean about being attracted to that area. It's part of a mythic cityscape that's always present in my mind, when I close my eyes... Jamie: 11th Apr 2005 - 19:37 GMTWhen i close my eyes. I think of all the places i thought i'd be. I think of all the faces i thought i'd see. I think about the city within -- When i go outside. I go to all the places i always go. I look at all the faces i always do. I think about the city within. hasslehoff: 12th Apr 2005 - 09:00 GMTalso: i like the way people beginning to interlink different articles here. elaine: 12th Apr 2005 - 10:13 GMTthe potential for a real leap in the city of the mind. Around the Papal death thang one of the geezers, I think an English high-up talked about his having been the first Pope to proselytise, because it was in his nature, and because he could, because of the GLOBAL VILLAGE i swear to god, a vatican official quoting Marshall Mcluhann, how far has the world mutated already? Meanwhile on the evolutionary scale, and RE your pics and your idea, what about Paul Gilroy on the idea of Rootedness V Routedness? He is talking about getting away from identity being about being where you are from, and more about where yyou're from, where you are, where you're going, and where you visit on the way, and I think that's a philosophical leap, to go with an idea about a linear city which was I think really just a fantasy in the 60s but maybe more like tangible reality now?
