This summer I moved from Chicago to Honolulu. I'm homesick as hell.

image 29062

This was home--the castle-like, multi-ballroomed, in some places disintegrating former Hotel Shoreland, also featured in this post. After this school year ends, it becomes condos.

This is a sculpture in the middle of the street. I read that it was declared an eyesore some time ago and the only reason it was still around when I left (or even when I got there) is that because it's in the middle of the street, it's on the border between two aldermen's wards, and they couldn't agree on who should pay to get rid of it. I wonder if it's still there?

This is the bizarre-ass mural I passed every day. I wish I had any official explanation for it (it seems to depict an apocalypse on one side of the street and on the other side there's a parade of tired-looking Chicagoans and a half-flaked-away poem about their suffering), but neither of the "Chicago's Murals" books (I think there were two, anyway) I've flipped through have mentioned it.

thanks! the thing about me, citynoise and honolulu is that (a) 2 of the 5 or so posts here are the Hawaii Graffiti series, which are some of my favorite cn entries ever and are really intimidating (b) i still feel like a tourist, but not in a good way, and given that i won't be here long it's possible that i always will and (c) so far i've had some bad luck in that my camera is slowly dying (see last picture) and when i pass good stickers / beautiful buildings / etc. i never seem to have it on hand anyway...
