When I drove past Montreal's shortly after the opening of the in , I noticed something I had never seen before. The torch above the had been lit.

I assume this was a temporary thing, due to Montreal being the site of the and will probably be extinguished in a few hours when the conclude in Beijing. Still, it is definitely interesting to see.

The plaque located at the foot of the rings. The text reads:

THE OLYMPIC RINGS
The five rings emblem was designed in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Modern Games, and was first used at the 1920 Antwerp Games. The five rings represent the five continents of the world, linked together to symbolize the sporting friendship of the world's population.

THE GAMES OF THE XXIst OLYMPIAD

The rings look like they are in great condition for being 32 years old - or are they newer additions?

EvilGentleman: 26th Aug 2008 - 02:27 GMT

Based on the plaque below them, I suspect they are originals. But this is one of those cases of my not knowing about something I have driven by many times, due to my eyes usually being on traffic.

Well Evil, I'm never on the streets of Montreal; but all the same:thanks for watching the road instead of the pretty shiney silver things instead :D

EvilGentleman: 26th Aug 2008 - 13:44 GMT

Shi-ney. Nice. I want to devote my life to wandering around the streets, picking up shiny things.

zagg: 26th Aug 2008 - 14:59 GMT

That is infact your next photo assignment. Wander the streets and photograph shiny things. GO!

CE: 27th Aug 2008 - 04:40 GMT

Neat. I had no idea the rings and torch were still there.

Vanesa: 22nd Sep 2008 - 01:40 GMT

this actually wasn't temporary. the torch stayed lit all throughout the olympics and all throughout the paralympics as well.
just wanted to point that out:)

EvilGentleman: 22nd Sep 2008 - 13:53 GMT

Thank you for commenting, Vanesa. I think we actually agree, since what I meant by temporary is that I believed that the torch was only lit during the period that IOC-approved games were happening. I suppose the next time we will we see it lit would be during the .
