now this area i know well since i grew up in bensonhurst and gravesend and the last picture looks like the sea beach express which is in gravesend and kinda skirts bensonhurst, better know as the R train it comes in from manhattan and ends at coney island. and in the 40's and 50's we bought cake at ebingers, the coffee crumb cake in those days was all about the huge crumbs

im really glad that my bedroom window doesnt overlook a busy train line, like in the last photo...

CE: Rent is probably cheap at least.

Peter: 18th Jun 2008 - 20:54 GMT

theres no cheap rent in nyc, so well just call it "less expensive", hehehe...

Back in the early 80's I lived in a great old dump of a building on Kings Hwy directly overlooking the N Train line as depicted in the last image. My fire escape hung right out over the line from the 4th floor and my kitchen window looked out directly on to the tracks. When the (Sea Beach) express train barreled by, the entire building literally shook and any conversation had to be suspended until after the train passed. It was that thunderously loud INSIDE my apartment! I spent countless hours watching the trains go by during the heyday of NYC graffiti and I took quite a bunch of great photos from this vantage point. Maybe I will check out what I have an post some of them.

That great vintage Ebingers sign is on a building on 18th Ave which was most recently an old Greek donut shop that unfortunately closed about ten years ago. Thanks for the great shots! Peace, Steven

Service Inadequacies All the Time

Though probably not sanctioned by the MTA, this "Service advisory" definitely conveys the increasing public sentiment in light of recent service cutbacks and double fare increases by the NYC Subway system, NYC Transit and the MTA.
