Banksy Work Painted Over by Islington Council?

- Jamie - Monday, June 9th, 2008 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

This story was assembled from reports in the mainstream media. Mostly newspapers. It has since been found to be entirely factually inaccurate.

Soon after ’s latest work appeared on a North street, conscientious workers from Council obliterated it, by whitewashing the offending wall. The 4ft by 4ft stencil, set on a lime green background, depicted two young girls sitting at a desk with a Kalashnikov rifle, playing with bullets rather than pencils.

The elusive , with his face hidden, was spotted painting the scene towards the end of May.

But the mural, which would have been worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, was promptly painted over with masonry paint, after residents complained. As no photos of the completed mural have surfaced, we can only assume it was buffed before anyone managed to snap it. Or maybe the photos just haven't hit flickr yet. Time will tell.

A local trader watched the artwork take shape and chatted to the secretive artist, who jokingly denied he was and said he was there to create an ‘advertising promotion’. The trader described the guerrilla painter, whose real identity has never been revealed, as ‘a very nice and pleasant chap’ in his 30s with a regional accent who was dressed in a green cotton army jacket and black jeans with closely-cropped mousy hair.

The trader, who did not want to be named, said told him he had painted the background colour on too thickly, and would have to wait until it dried before being able to use his stencils.

He said: "I saw literally watching paint dry! I told him it could be ruined soon, but he said as long as a few people saw it and enjoyed it, that was OK with him."

"The final mural was beautiful. The council are idiots. Why don’t they concentrate on the real graffiti and leave street art for people to enjoy?"

Last year, Council compiled a list of works by Banksy in their area to prevent them being painted over by clean-up teams. But one council spokesman now says: "It’s graffiti and we treat it that way, whether it’s Banksy or not. Residents in the houses opposite complained and we covered it up."

In an interview with a national newspaper today, talks about his recent artistic assault on an entire street near Station in . He says:

"Graffiti doesn’t always spoil buildings. In fact, it’s the only way to improve a lot of them. In the space of a few hours with a couple of hundred cans of paint, I’m hoping we can transform a dark, forgotten filth pit into an oasis of beautiful art – in a dark, forgotten filth pit."

it wasn't banksy, it was some guy called Hutch. Here it is...

I don't see why the neighbours complained, it's not really offensive.

Jamie: 11th Jun 2008 - 08:12 GMT

Yes. That's clearly not a Banksy piece. Congratulations to the mainstream media for putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5. That's not even an AK is it? And one of the 'girls' is a boy. I guess that explains the mystery of why Islington Council painted over it though. It's not a Banksy so it isn't worth anything and as such has no positive effect on house prices. Gotta help those rich get richer innit!

I shall edit the title of this post accordingly

Jamie: 11th Jun 2008 - 08:34 GMT

And further to that, here are some photos of the actual work in-situ.

And here is the photo published by The Daily Mail in their story: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1024884 which appears to be the original source of all reports about a "buffed banksy piece"

So as well as it not being a Banksy, it being signed "Hutch", it being a Boy and a Girl and the gun not being a Kalshnikov... the Daily Mail also took a photo of the wrong wall for their story. Nice work guys.

A comment from Hutch himself via Flickr

"[The Daily Mail Story] refers to the stencil i did of the two kids loading a rifle. Read it, it's hilarious. Wrong wall, wrong artist, mousy brown hair..? Also, I love how all the comments beneath none of them had actually seen the piece before the council buffed it."

grd: 11th Jun 2008 - 11:36 GMT

since when have the Daily Fail ever been ones for reporting facts?

Jamie: 11th Jun 2008 - 11:46 GMT

True. It just never ceases to amaze me (I know it shouldn't) when journalist get the basic facts of a story so wrong. To the extent in this case that once corrected, it isn't really even newsworthy.

grd: 11th Jun 2008 - 12:25 GMT

haha too true. What never ceases to amaze me is that people still buy that tripe! I guess as long as people are happy to swallow it, they're just gonna keep feeding it. Sad state of affairs.

Jamie: 11th Jun 2008 - 13:19 GMT

At least they're not feeding the public with made-up stories about an imaginary "war on terror" or something. Something like that would be scary.

Evansy: 9th Oct 2008 - 12:39 GMT

it may not be banksy but its still a talented piece of art

Paul Baines: 14th Nov 2008 - 05:46 GMT

Westminster Council are up to the same tricks - they even posted a comment at my blog defending their actions :/
