Bloor Street: a hydrant right next to a hydrant with a hose between them. How bizarre! What for?

m: hydrants are holding hands i think

zagg: hydrant sex! bow chicka bow wow!

Just hope this does not mean the hydrant on the left is being replaced! It is the old-fashioned, Toronto-specific TWW (Toronto Water Works) cast type and the newer one is generic.

you know, pow, i didnt even notice that but youre right- the one on the left is much nicer and more unique.

curiously, i grew up in a town down south that had a huge us pipe and foundry (www.uspipe.com) plant in it that made the bulk of the "generic style" american hydrants that stipple about every city in the us. i spotted hydrants recently in , , and that sported the name of my hometown plant, so i feel your hydrant pride :)

Peter, yes, these little things give a city its signature

Notice the red and blue shutoff valves. One is hot the other is cold!

this is a new watermain installation. the hydrant on the left is feeding the hydrant on the right through backflow preventer to stop bacteria in the new line from entering the existing line. the cheap hydrant on the right is only being used as temporary 'faucet' and will be removed.
