Bloor Street: a hydrant right next to a hydrant with a hose between them. How bizarre! What for?

Just hope this does not mean the hydrant on the left is being replaced! It is the old-fashioned, Toronto-specific TWW (Toronto Water Works) cast type and the newer one is generic.

you know, pow, i didnt even notice that but youre right- the one on the left is much nicer and more unique.

curiously, i grew up in a town down south that had a huge us pipe and foundry (www.uspipe.com) plant in it that made the bulk of the "generic style" american hydrants that stipple about every city in the us. i spotted hydrants recently in , , and that sported the name of my hometown plant, so i feel your hydrant pride :)

Peter, yes, these little things give a city its signature

It's hard to say why they have done that. It seems as though the new hydrant is connected to a new watermain that has not been connected underground yet. So they connected the new hydrant to the old one which is still connected to the old watermains. That way they can get water into the new line. It's also possible that the new one was put in temporarily to provide water for something.
The new one is an AVK which is a (cheap) copy of the old Mueller 107 hydrant.

Notice the red and blue shutoff valves. One is hot the other is cold!
