Not a whole lot of pictures on here from Chicago unfortunately. Peter's recent post of Fulton Street Station in NYC reminded me of how interesting it can be to compare and contrast major subway systems. Chicago's El (so aptly named as an abbreviation of "Elevated" although some parts are underground) consists of eight different colored lines that do a pretty good job of covering most of the city.

Many of the underground stations in the Loop along the the red and blue lines have graphics displaying the streetscape above ground.
Cutie in boots at Damen in Wicker Park. Original wooden platforms add a nice historic touch.
Everyone rides the El. It's often very crowded, especially during peak hours.
One thing that really surprised me was how slooooooooooow the El can be. Hailing from the Northeast and being accustomed to the fast-paced rat race, these Midwestern trains sure seemed to take their sweet time getting from stop to stop.

nice! i had a few shots from my trip to chicago this past april that i wanted to add:
and youre definitely right... i took the el from ohare airport to the loop... it took longer than i thought it would, by nyc standards, but it was a nice ride... and when i stood up to consult the station map, practically everyone in the car pitched in to advise me the proper and speediest route to my hotel... heh.

nice pics Peter! the constant passing of El trains above your head definitely add to the uniqueness of the Loop. that trip from O'Hare is no joke! it took me 45 minutes to cover 15 miles! that midwestern hospitality is something I'm not used to. there was one day when I didn't have enough change to get on the train, and a woman just randomly offered to pay my fare! people in Philly would just ignore you.

yeah, i liked chicago. i plan on going back more in the future; its a cheap flight from nyc. i wonder if someone living in the urban northeast would enjoy living in illinois after the novelty of chicago's awesomeness wore off... the city itself actually reminded me of philly a lot in some ways, but with, like, a completely different sort of people comprising the population, if that makes sense...
i really look forward to going back when its not winter time. btw, this post reminded me that i have lots of chicago photos i never got around to posting, so ill get on that, too...
