A Streetcar (-filled City) Named Lisboa

One of Lisbon's most enchanting aspects (and it has many!) are its lovely streetcars, which have been rattling through it's windy hills since the 19th century. The originals--imported from the US, and called, appropriately, "americanos"--are now protected in Lisbon's Public Transport Museum; however, those still in use retain a very distinctive old-world charm.

Here are a few pictures of these wonderful machines:

One of the "elevators" at rest. These types of trams (there are 2 or 3, I think) spend the whole day moving in a straight line: Up. Down. Repeat.

Another "elevator", at the height of it's trajectory.

Caught this one chugging by as I ate lunch on a terrace. Notice the gentleman taking in the view from his apartment window. Apparently even the locals get a kick out of Lisbon's streetcars.

Critter in the Basement

I love this spotted salamander. Once or twice a year s/he makes an appearance in the basement. Last summer I found one at the bottom of the compost pile. They're like little gods--so regal!
