Catalán Gothic
[previous] :: [next]Sardinia is an island awash in history. Human remains dating back 250,000 years have been discovered there, and through the centuries Sardinia has been ruled over by many a Mediterranean power. In Alghero, in the northwest part of the island, the dominant historical remnants date back to the Gothic period, when the Spanish kingdom of Aragon ruled Sardinia. The legacy of this Spanish rule is felt today, both architecturally and linguistically. Alghero's walled Gothic quarter resembles many a Catalán village and, believe it or not, Catalán is still an official language in the NE province of Logudoro. Here are some pictures from a walk through the Gothic quarter and along it's lovely seaside fortifications.
