Going Around the World On Danforth Avenue

- Elicar - Saturday, March 22nd, 2008 : goo

There was a time when Danforth Avenue was synonymous to Souvlaki and Greeks. It may still be. But Greektown is but a small portion of Danforth Avenue and the other areas are developing. Apart from the Greektown Business Improvement Association (BIA) which is from Jones to Chester, there are two other BIA's that I discovered on my walk today from Victoria Park to Broadview: Danforth Village BIA (Victoria Park to Greenwood) and Danforth BIA (Chester to Broadview). I wonder if there is another BIA from Greenwood to Jones?

Danforth Avenue boasts a wide variety of restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world. It is expected that there is a concetration of Greek restaurants in Greektown, but non-Greek restaurants are becoming as popular. There are also a lot of businesses and service providers that cater to specific ethnic groups other than Greeks, the most predominant being South Asians on the eastern part of the Danforth.

Here are some of the pictures I took today:

Apparently, they serve the best fish and chips in Toronto.

A Catholic church. Oddly enough, there were at least 8 churches that I saw, but there was no Greek Orthodox church.

bloor west village in toronto was the very first BIA in the 1970s. for those from out of town, danforth becomes bloor as it passes west through the city, so essentially along the same street.

TABIA has good maps of the city's BIA's:
www.toronto-bia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=43&Itemid=86

and to answer your question, the TABIA site says there's a BIA from westlake in the east to jones in the west, called 'midtown danforth BIA'. danforth village BIA ends at westlake.

These stopped two blocks west of Main (Westlake).

But realtors' boundaries of the Danforth Village are:

"Danforth Village spans from Victoria Park Avenue west to Greenwood Avenue, and includes the first few blocks north of The Danforth down to the railway line just north of Gerrard Street East."

www.rebeccalaing.com/4a_custpage_6565.html

I should've believed my eyes! ;)

Anyway, Midtown Danforth BIA is the only one without banners or flags or however you call them.

jeeff: heh, i'm not surprised to find contradictions.

The greek orthodox church is just around the corner from that church you took a pic of (holy name).
