Night Life

part of the same commission, this is a series of portraits of nocturnal characters in tokyo. some are real people. here's a run-down:

1) a road worker. road work is generally done at night when the traffic is thinner. they wear lilac-coloured jumpsuits.

2) a convenience store clerk for the daily yamazaki chain.

3) a neighbourhood scavenger who gathers junk and recyclables. this particular guy strapped all sorts of things to his back and shoulders. i nicknamed him "the hermit crab." a real person.

4) a convenience store clerk for the AM/PM chain. i saw him almost every night. a real person.

5) a police officer, drawn from a poster tacked up all around town.

6) a yakuza thug. they really look like something right out of goodfellas. there are two types. one, the majority, wears a flashy suit. the other wears a baggy tracksuit and lots of jewelry.

7) an aging prostitute. she stood at the end of the pedestrian mall every night. a real person.

8) a homeless drunk. slept at the corner of a busy intersection in a pile of cardboard boxes. a real person.

9) the dog who lived next door to me. kept most of the day in a small garage. i often heard it whining at night. a real dog.

10) a delivery guy from the fish market.

11) a homeless woman with some sort of skeletal deformity in her face and spine. a real person.

12) a drunk salaryman.

Fear of Food

A place called Superdawg. The blinking eyes on the anthropomorphic hot dogs scared the hell out of me but there was a long line out the door so I guess they must be pretty good.
