The Bogside
[previous] :: [next]The Catholic Bogside area of the city, back in 1972, was the now infamous stage for what has become known as Bloody Sunday. Signs and remembrances of Bloody Sunday and the Conflict are especially evident along Rossville Street, where many of the events occurred. Perhaps the most famous symbol, and one which was there before Bloody Sunday occurred, is the Free Derry sign that ardently declares the Republican rejection of British rule.
Also located near this Free Derry Corner, is a sculpture in honor of the Hunger Strikers. The sculpture is H-shaped because the prisoners at Maze Prison were kept in an H-shaped cellblock

Erin go bragh is a badly anglicized form of Éireann go Brách, meaning Ireland forever. It is pronounced Erin guh brawk watcher: 1st Apr 2005 - 01:35 GMTRe: The Bogside just back in nottingham after my tour of the famous bog side and American: 19th May 2005 - 21:15 GMTI personally feel that there is too much hatred and attention on the British in Bogside. No offense but shit happens, and my family was Irish about 100 years removed and they came over to The United States because of the potato famine. You don’t see me having anger towards the British people. I mean life goes on, if you’re Catholic great if you’re protestant great for you too, you’re both believing in the same God so at the end of the day, why spend your time… fighting something you’re never going to win? There are more important things in life. mon nom: 11th Jun 2005 - 13:58 GMTOkay, American. Maybe if the "rich" Brits and Protestants who employed the Catholics for peanuts actually HELPED the Catholicas get through the famine, then maybe you family wouldn't have had to move to the US, hm? Yeah. What is it that is being fought for that won't be won? Louise, Scotland: 29th Jun 2005 - 09:22 GMTI live in Glasgow although I am Irish. Im planning to move to back to the Bogside because I believe in what the Catholics are fighting for. Catholics in Glasgow are treated in much the same way, we are divided. strabane republican: 12th Jul 2005 - 14:23 GMTI Think the paintings in the bogside are great all murals in strabane are painted over and it is shit. glory to the IRA remember 1916 McGinley: 20th Oct 2005 - 15:35 GMTMy interest in the Bogside Area is strictly ancestral... I am confused at some documents ive seen. It shows Stanleys Walk, Bogside, Derry. So is Stanleys walk part of Bogside area. If anyone has pctures of that area I would love to see them.
nash ira: 24th Oct 2005 - 13:19 GMTup the ra tiocfaidh ar la long live the provos kill all huns burn the cunts brit bastard hughbooze: 29th Oct 2005 - 18:29 GMTAnybody who gets the chance visit the bogside the people are great after all the shit they have been through it is amazing how friendly and reseptive they are provie: 6th Nov 2005 - 13:16 GMTi think the people in the bogside are very proud people more should be done to remember all volenteers who gave their lives through the years. keep on the fight and tide will turn on britain mark: 7th Nov 2005 - 02:58 GMTMy grandfather was from Dublin and a republican. He saw in his time many turn their backs on the north and the suffering of nationalists/Catholics. He never forgot and many havent the world over. Keep the fight going the world knows the scandal that is the gerrymandering corrupt British empire which has distroy our ancient Ulster Province of Ireland. Glory to the IRA and 1916, H blocks, its not those who can inflict the most but those who can suffer the most who will conquer. YOUR DAY WILL COME! Erinslion: 8th Nov 2005 - 06:04 GMTOn May 27th, 2005 I set foot on Irish soil for the first time at Shannon airport in Ennis. A week later I wandered the streets of Derry from sundown until 4 in the morning. I saw the murals, visited the Bogside Inn and the Celtic, stood in front of the memorials... I just want to say that not every American "Plastic Paddy" is too uneducated to appreciate the struggle and hardships faced by you in the Bogside. "Leave Ireland to the Irish, not for London or for Rome" Marc Carmichael, American-Irish
mick m scotland: 23rd Dec 2005 - 17:01 GMTi have been down the bogside a good few times and have been in the bogside inn also the cetlic bar and every time i have been there i have been well treated by the locals I also worked at seagate, i always looked foward to visting the bogside and talking to the people realist: 28th Dec 2005 - 20:16 GMTif everyone who considers themselves british is to leave ireland does that mean everyone who calls themselves ethnic irish should leave brittian ? mcsheffrey: 14th Jan 2006 - 00:22 GMTi have been to the bogside everyone mekes you more than welcome Outsider's view: 3rd Feb 2006 - 17:53 GMTWith all this hatred, the British could leave and you would still destroy yourselves. You have hatred for religion and hatred towards countries - there is little hope unless you change your attitudes. The Irish have been through a lot of violence and sorrow and should have learned that hatred brings hatred live your lives, love your families, be proud but the world is destroying its self and some things are more important than others. I understand your anger for the past but the past should be left there and the future is now! andy smith: 4th Feb 2006 - 21:12 GMTjust back from the bloody sunday comemeration, lets hope that savile give the familes some closure and the people of the bogside can move forward to a better just ireland where they can decide there own fate and not be ruled by a prodestant stormont goverment for a prodestant people delphine: 6th Feb 2006 - 16:27 GMTi've studied the irish civilisation in university and then, i decided to come in northern ireland to learn things far from the books and the classrooms, i've been living here for 5 months. i have to say that i'm truly republican and that i hate what the british did to the catholic irishduring all those centuries. but i wonder if it's not a utopia to believe in a unified ireland, i mean, did you see what happened in belfast last september? i was crazy, i think the independance of the north would mean another civil war, but still, i hope that one day, the whole territory of ireland will be given back to the irish. stephen: 15th Feb 2006 - 15:37 GMTiam from the republic i think it is time for a united ireland it makes scence both econmic and social. It doesnt seem the british government give a toss about northern Ireland or the peopel including the unionist peopel. The only way for peace to be secured is to unite Ireland. The protestant peopel are largely accpted in Ireland so its time for peace and a united Ireland Flannagan: 9th Mar 2006 - 14:54 GMTMost Protestants are selfish and ignorant in ireland Ian paisley for instance, cant they compromise, any compromise at all and then its giving in to catholic demands.PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rapunzel: 10th Mar 2006 - 14:56 GMTI will acknowledge that I know shit about this situation. I only stopped to look at this online because it reminded me of some graffiti I read in a toilet in SOUTH AMERICA. Someone had written something about "Londenderry" and another had come along and crossed out "London" and written "piss off Brit!". I am fascinated. I am Canadian... now also Australian.... Nat MacDunleavy: 13th Mar 2006 - 10:23 GMTIt was called Derry before some londoners came over and changed its name because it made them feel more at home. Thats the story in ireland Kevin Ryan: 22nd Mar 2006 - 02:35 GMTI'm a "plastic Paddy " from the U.S. who visited the Bogside Inn last October 05 had a great time with some of the nicest people we met in all of Ireland. These people have been through so much in thier lives but still have a great outlook. One day Ireland will be free of the Brits. a.l.m: 30th Mar 2006 - 03:40 GMTI'm an American and I'm a history major with a concentration in European History. Since I am of Irish ancestry, I have naturally done substantial research on Ireland and my heritage. I am curious though, can someone who is native give me an honest answer about why Irish Americans are hated? I mean I've heard the nicknames "paddywacker, plastic-paddy" but I don't go around bragging about my ancestry and neither does my family. I just want native Irish to know that not all Irish-Americans are bad people. I hope that someone could give me an honest answer and I also don't mean to offend anyone by posting this. I'm proud of my heritage and it's so nice to know their are people left in this world who believe in their countries the finn: 7th Apr 2006 - 22:26 GMTi believe in a nation once again ireland will be free one day and i would fight for the rights of the working class the small farmer too. If you look at the english they came into scotland and were fought straight back out and the same will happen in ireland.I hate the orange bastards and the brittish scum they have never had any right in ireland and never can have any right in ireland. OO AH UP DA RA keep fighting and i will join you one day soo R.I.P bobby sands and POLITICAL PRISONER tims jerry from derry: 22nd Apr 2006 - 21:37 GMTget the brits out of ireland for once and for all.
