Spring in January?

- Elicar - Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 : goo

Eat your heart out Evil G! Our temperature today rose up to 12 degrees Centigrade. I checked yours. High is 3 degrees Centigrade. Pooh!

I took these pictures yesterday and decided to post it to rub it in! ;)

Yes, after the snow dump before Christmas and a couple of days in negative double digits, the weather has been fairly mild. It's that or I have a short memory!

With the warmer weather comes the sad reality:

Meh, it's 7 degrees at 6 AM here, and the other side of the river from here hit 15 a couple hours ago (check St-Anicet, QC).

We're still buried in snow here, but that is hardly a surprise, considering 153.2 cm of snow has fallen here since the first measurable snowfall on November 20. Look at our December figures here www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=XX&StationID=5415&Year=2007&Month=12&Day=1

Glad you enjoyed the warm days. Don't forget, whatever you get, we get a day later. By Wednesday, Environment Canada is forecasting us to be warmer here. You may get the warm air first, but when the cold comes back, you also get that first, too.

And I don't think I want to get too warm just yet, I'd rather stay winterized, so it won't be such a shock when the real winter weather returns.

Now, think of this: I have 7 degrees at the moment (6:50 AM), and when I look to where I used to live, in , Nunavut, I see they have a current temperature of -30, after reaching a typical low of -33.

Your latest temperature (12 degrees, as of 6 AM), and in your former home of Manila, it is currently 27 degrees.

So... who do you think feels warmer right now? :-P

little ukraine: 8th Jan 2008 - 14:20 GMT

high in NY is supposed to be 67 F, what's that, just under 20 C? record high in any case. absurd.

Elicar: 9th Jan 2008 - 02:42 GMT

It went up to 14.9 C yesterday; warmer today. Dunno the exact temperature. Which reminded me of the third week of January in 2006. I came back from Cuba wearing denim shorts planning to change at Pearson upon arrival. Because of the mild 6 C weather, I did not bother to change.

The 27 degrees in Manila might sound appealing to you, but if you have been there, you'd know that the 27 would feel like 270 with the humidity.

Okay, I am exaggerating a little bit. If there is a time to visit Manila, it is now because it is their coolest. In their "summer" which is April and May, the heat becomes very oppressive.

Forecast for tomorrow is -2 by the evening! Oh well, we enjoyed the springlike weather while it lasted.

nice shot of homeless person got to get out there and get some of new york's homeless.

EvilGentleman: 13th Jan 2008 - 21:36 GMT

Finally dropped below freezing again last night. It's now -4 out there. Oh well, only 2 1/2 months until REAL spring...

And in the Arctic, I had whole years where the highest temperature was 19. I have woken up on Canada Day (July 1st, to those not already in the know) to find a few inches of fresh snow. Latest snowfall I recall was July 7th, and the earliest was August 22nd. Glad to be back south, in Montreal.

And the humidity does not bother me, either in the heat or the cold. My wife often says the humidity down here makes her feel a lot colder than she does back home up north, but I find no difference at all.

When I was a kid in Cornwall, Ontario, I remember Saudi Arabian exchange students bitching about the heat and humidity all summer long. Cornwall is only an hour from here, so I guess I live in a sometimes muggy climate, but it seldom bothers me, except when I'm trying to sleep.

Guess I have encountered so many extreme conditions in my many travels around North America, that I have become somewhat weather-resistant. I can tolerate the heat better than the Saudis, and I can handle the cold better than the Inuit. Now THAT's what you call the Canadian experience, LOL!
