Anglos Go Home

- CE - Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

It's not often that you see politically charged graffiti concerning language in Montreal these days but once and awhile something will pop up. I recently snapped this picture of a somewhat buffed "Anglos go home" piece in the Bonaventure Metro station. As of today when I came out of the metro, it still remains.

jeeff: the irony that it's in english.

Jamie: 19th Dec 2007 - 09:18 GMT

But surely if it were en français then the stupid anglophones wouldn't be able to read it.

Peter: 19th Dec 2007 - 16:27 GMT

im wondering where, exactly, theyre supposed to "go home" to... anglo-ville? or are they referring to tourists or something?

EvilGentleman: 19th Dec 2007 - 20:12 GMT

I guess they would go home to England. Mind you, the writer of the wall scrawl above has not considered what that might also imply for the French of Quebec. Oh well, at least I'm safe.

But if the English and French leave, then I suppose the housing market will be a heck of a lot cheaper. But very different ethnicities. I guess I should buy a Hindi-Mandarin dictionary, or perhaps an Italian-Mohawk one.

Peter: 19th Dec 2007 - 21:57 GMT

yes, it always makes me chuckle a bit when one non-indigenous subset of people start possessively talking down to another subset of non-indigenous people in terms of their collective geography. makes one wonder what gives them the idea it should be inherently franco/anglo/whatever in the first place...

jeeff: 20th Dec 2007 - 06:07 GMT

by writing in english they implicitly acknowledge that english is a valid medium for communication. at least if they wrote it in french they could say, "fuck you, we don't care what you understand!"

Peter: 20th Dec 2007 - 19:29 GMT

sort of reminds me of this

joey: en francais: les anglos vont à la maison

I'm just in love with the idea that people still act as if somewhere in the past our creator handed out land assignments to the various peoples that were to remain fixed and immobile for eternitiy regardless of changing needs and circumstances.

Afroblanco: 5th Jun 2009 - 20:50 GMT

I'm just in love with the idea that people still act as if somewhere in the past there actually was a creator.

Franny Wentzel: 7th Jun 2009 - 18:22 GMT

Funny but the people who crow about there not being a god strike me as one of those spoiled little hell-brats who are fond of pointing out the hypocricies of their parents to justify whatever atrocity they'd just been caught red-handed at.

Navet: 2nd Jul 2009 - 21:15 GMT

In Quebec, some francos feel threatened by the anglos since they don't use our language in our province which is the only french province. They are only saying "go home" as a way to tell them they are not welcome. But not all the Quebecers feel the same about it, its about point of views. Sorry if my english is bad, myself I am a francophone.

Latecomer: 1st Sep 2009 - 17:24 GMT

Navet's post says it all and is indicative of the impenatrable racism and twisted logic that exists in Quebec. Anglos don't use your language in 'your' province'? Since when does Quebec belong exclusivelly to the Quebecois? How dare you say such a thing. Who do you think you are? You also say that Francos are only saying "go home" as a way to tell Anglos they are not welcome. Why are Anglos not welcome Navet? Because we are not Francos? Pure racism. Navet, we we're born in Quebec and have contributed to the advancment of the province for centuries. Navet, my experiences have convinced me that most Quebecois do feel this way. Anglos are constantly portrayed as the enemy and are told to leave if they don't like the discrimination. They will say (with a sickenly paternalistic tone) that the Quebecois treat 'their' Anglos minority very well. The Quebecois are in the overwhelming majority in Quebec, and yet they still feel threatened because Anglos dare to speak English, their mother tongue. I find the besieged mindset of the Quebecois to be truly pathetic. The politicians and school system have done an impressive job of brainwashing you all. Good luck with your future.

Asparagi

Not a big fan of this veggie, but it makes for a great photo! Asparagus in all its glory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus FYI - the plural of asparagus is asparagus (not asparagi)
