Honeybird Bridge and Ruins

Honeybird is a farming community between Hectorspruit and Barberton, near Lowes Creek in Mpumalanga. Not much happens here. The population is probably no bigger than 500 people.
One of the most well known residents is a construction owner. an enormously wealthy fella name Andries. Andries' house burnt down a few years back but Andries chose not to rebuild it. Andries is a missionary and has decided that the Lord chose to relieve him of the house. He now lives in a caravan in front of the house. You can support Andries' mission by visiting his website www.grandfinale.co.za I am not posting picture of Andries or his living arrangements. The images here are all of sights in the neighbourhood

The area consists mainly of small holdings of approximately 10 - 15 hectares. Not much happens in the area. I enjoy visiting Andries when in need of some quiet. The lodest noise in the area is the call of the whip poor will. The occassional car moving in the area. I sit and imagine what it must have been like when this was not just a 40 minute journey from Nelspruit. By horse it would have taken 2 days.

Communication is important
The phonebox' nearest neighbour is a house about half a mile away.

These are great shots, Guy! I remember driving through Transkei and Ciskei, and seeing old abandoned towns like this, part of the forgotten geography of apartheid.

damn, it looks abandoned. doesnt look like it has a population of even 500 people
