Church on a Green
[previous] :: [next]A trip to the end of the 5 line, Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and a 10-minute walk across the border into Mt. Vernon brings you to historic St. Paul's Church.
"Upon this verdant hillock lie inter'd" many important citizens from Eastchester's early years. The earliest gravestone dates to 1704.
At a not-yet-completed St. Paul's Church, Hessian soldiers hired to aid the British troops during the Revolutionary War set up a temporary hospital. They dismantled the original wooden church, which stood just across the green, to use for firewood. Oh, and here's a pretty beat-up coffee shop.
