In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I love that song, i marched again with my VFW post on Veterans Day, the old men tell me stories about the attack on Pearl and the invasion of normandy and what it was like on the beach that morning, about the battle of the bulge (and its not about a diet plan), yep, the old men still remember they're days in combat, they're buddies dying, and i listen to them and as they talk i think about my buddie who died, i heard his screams, i talked to him as he died, i looked up in disbelief, i stood up, picked up my M-14, and walked away, my friend whom i laughed with and we made fun so many times about the day's in Korea, he is dead, i'm alive and older now and he is still 21 in my eyes, he was older than me, i was 19 at the time, yep, freedom has a very high price. thank you for this poem and pictures.
