i think these are what remains of the float bridges that were used to unload the barges known as car floats. the carfloats were used by different railroads to move their trains across the north and east rivers to connect with the tracks on the oppisite sides of the rivers.

Batty: Really great shots!

Fantastic pics of a place I knew well. People used to live under the openings anywhere they could find a place along Newtown Creek. Iwas a vicious cut-throat lifestyle. When I was a kid, there was an old man named Mr. Raab who lived in Queens that I delivered newspapers to (He was in his 80's at the time, making his date of birth somewhere in or about the late 1880's), who told me how he used to take a small rowboat from his place in Queens down Newton creek all the way towards the city near to and beyond where these photos illustrate. Thanks for uncovering some distant memories.

I live by the creek on the long island city side and find it to have an interesting history. Could anyone tell me anything else about the history?
