The Time I Almost Saw the Beatles.

I got my pass to go out on the town, i was headed towards the flattop, a GI houseboat bar on the Rhine river, it was may of 1963, as i strolled the cobblestone street my mind drifted to a few weeks before when i was on guard duty, in the middle of the night, walking around a compound listening to music from my little portable radio, it was radio luxenbourg and the announcer say's here is a new recording of the liverpool beatles song,'i want to hold your hand' and so i heard the beatles sing the song in german, yes, german, i liked it, i thought, wow, these guys sound great, it was different, not the same old doo wop rxr but a whole new sound, schock, schock i heard bringing me back to the moment and then i saw rosie, good old rosie, she was waiting for me, she in her german accent couldn't say jack, it was more of jock but drolled out as schock in her cute voice, it was almost french sounding and i have to admit, yes, i liked it, i liked rosie calling me schock as if i was a frenchman and not a GI, we had a date and so we went off to the milan cafe for coffee and desert, we played some music on the jukebox, the joint was crowded with people, and rosie was trying her best to entertain me, her hair was jet black, short so short that it fell around her cheeks, we were only friends, so i had better mention this so we won't start thinking there is a story here, and sometimes my buddy tom would date her, actually it wasn't dating, it was just going out and not being alone but having a lot of fun, and so we stopped off at a bar that was owned by a friend of mine, she had been a colonel in the israeli army, and she had just hired two girls as waiters, now i can talk a lot about ruth but that will be another time lets get back to the beatles, so i see this vision of beauty serving me a beer and i say to myself i have to ditch rosie to be able to talk to this girl, she says thanks when i paid her and i realized i was speaking to an english speaking girl because i didn't hear danke but thanks, so i take rosie home and i ran back to ruth's place to see her, daphine, as i neared the bar i stopped to catch my breath and compose myself and then i walked in like kinda matter-of-factly and i seat myself at the bar. daphine sees me and smiles and she asks me what i want to drink, (like what else do you drink in germany), and i tell her beer, and we start to talk, she is british, but britin's claim to be english, and i always thought that english was a language but anyway she was english and from liverpool, so like i had heard of liverpool but i never went there nor would i think of going there, now daphine had long black hair, straight, with bangs almost covering her blue eyes, she had a model's face and tall and slim but not skinny, with curves where they belonged and a full 36b cup or at least i imagined it that way, english, how long had it been since i talked to an english speaking girl, except for the nurse, no other time in over two years, well we went out, she had been touring europe with her three cousins, another girl and two blokes, nice guys and we became friends, as we were sitting in the park on the grass chatting one sunny day she asked me if i wouldn't like to come to liverpool with them and i could stay at her parents home and we all could go out and see the beatles at the pub where they hang out and the beatles played, and i in my wisdom stated, "nah, they're just another group that will have one or two good songs and then they will die out like so many other groups" gulp, gulp,(a second gulp was for a dumb remark) and so i passed on the opp to meet the beatles and so history has kicked me once more in that special area where the sun rarely shines, and 44 years later i'm still hearing beatles music and i smile because i was this close -()-.

Gotta love bikinis.... mmmmmm.....
I know, jack. My Sexe Cite post is right through the roof, and Super Sexe and Sex Appeal are doing pretty good, too. Sex sells.

Too bad you never got to see the Beatles. My first experience with the Fab Four, where I actually learned who they were was in December 1980. My parents were working on things in the basement and I was 11 years old, upstairs listening to the radio. All of a sudden, every station was talking about the same thing.

I called down the stairs and asked "Who's John Lennon?"
My mother yelled back up, "He's one of the Beatles. Why do you ask?"
I said, "He's dead. Someone shot him"
A long silence followed...
Then...
"What? Are you serious?"
"Yup, it's taken over the programming on every radio station."

I still was not 100% sure who the Beatles or John Lennon were, but as their music filled the airwaves for the next month, I kept saying, "They did that one too? Wow, I know a lot of their music, but I never knew who it was."

Later on in life, I always regretted not having the chance to get familiar with the work of John Lennon while he was alive. Although he was an unknown person in the news to me on that fateful December day, I have ever since wished I could have had a chance to meet the man who started his famous Bed-In For Peace on the day I was born. Life can be so cruel.

Holy Shit! I just realized, Montreal has a President Kennedy Avenue, but nothing named after John Lennon, who is such an important part of Montreal's history. I should start petitioning for them to name something after him.
