Hello, Brooklyn natives! I've spent all of my 20 years in a boring, white development nestled "safely" in the valleys of Pennsylvania. I recently moved to a city and I live in the heart of town. City life is the only life for me. I do not feel threatened by people because all races, genders, and believers are my brothers and sisters.

I plan to move to Brooklyn in a year or so. I work as a caregiver now, but I am saving up money to have a large amount to move to Brooklyn so I'm financially safe. I have no idea how city life works, and I will be moving there with no job. I can use all the advice I need as to the following questions:

Which part of Brooklyn is the best for a 20 yr old musician/artist?

Is it better to work in Manhattan and live in Brooklyn?

Are there any helpful websites which can acquaint me with the area and assist with finding jobs/homes?

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!

i see nobody has given this a stab yet so... here goes...

first of all, congratulations for having the initiative to save up a lot of money, because it is first and foremost what you will need in order to 'make it.' i mean that purely in the sense that new york is an expensive-ass city, and you need that safety net. i wish my cousin, who moved here from california, had been as intent on saving up money as you are...

anyway, many young musicians and artists live in williamsburg and greenpoint, just across the river from manhattan's lower east side and east village. there is a pretty huge well-established music scene in williamsburg (discussions as to its vibrancy and productivity are for another much more annoying thread entirely), so there are plenty of bars, venues, restaurants, and the like. the most popular locations are off of the Bedford and Lorimer stops of the L line and the Metropolitan Ave and Nassau Ave stops on the G (the Lorimer and Metropolitan stops are actually the same).

oops hit post too soon-
just a few more words - the area i described has been well under... er, 'development' for over a decade, and it's hitting the point where shitloads of condos are being built there. rent is increasing, though it's still less than anything you'd find in manhattan.

many, many people live in bk and work in manhattan. if you can find work in brooklyn (not that it's terribly hard), though, great.

websites... craigslist, i personally like curbed.com if you want to read about real estate development.. though its probably the sort of thats more enjoyable once you already know new york.

well that's the most objective honest answer i can give. i wish you lots of luck, take some pictures and let the CN community know how brooklyn is treating you. new york is a wonderful city...

lou: Thank you, so much.

I live in BK, and ill tell you first hand that although the area has gone through some gentrification, it's still not entirely safe. My house had just been broken into last week (again)! I live in Ft. Green and I find that the "natives" (including myself) do not take too kindly to "yuppies" moving into the neighborhoods. Have you considered Queens?

I suggest Astoria and parts of Long Island City. Lot's of nice apartments close to the city.

This used to be the cinema district, but it's been absorbed by a rapidly expanding Chinatown and is mostly flats now.
