Man, I remember it as the Soho Zat.
Then it was Soho Down and under or something like that..
But to me it's still the Soho Zat.
Got all my graff shit here back in the early 1990's.
Got robbed for my video camera by a dude with a butcher knife
back in 1993 on W. Broadway.
^^True story......

I bugged out when I went in this place. The store would bug out any oldskool NYC. writer. The idea that you can openly purchase graf supplies to begin with is bugged. I still cannot get used to the idea of buying your paint!. But, then... those good ol'dayz are in the past. I pointed out an old pic of mine in can control(or one of those mags), the personnel couldnt believe it. Damn!!, am I really a friggin dinosaur.

graff king AAK: do they have fine line caps here?

Jess: 24th Dec 2007 - 01:15 GMT

Hey, I used to work at Soho Zat back in 1983. I loved it. They only hired punks. It was the coolest place to work - vintage comic books, porn, various sundries (all legal...), vintage clothes... We had so much fun doing the front window with skulls and chains and variousness. Those days are missed... New York is not the same any more...

what?: 31st Dec 2007 - 14:30 GMT

Peter: 28th May 2008 - 01:50 GMT

ive never been id'd there. but then again... i aint no spring chicken.

jus: 3rd Jun 2008 - 02:34 GMT

scrap yard is pretty good. very small, but there's a lot you can buy. Toys from Kid Robot, Caps (3 for $1), markers (dalo, uni, deco, etc.), mops (do em dirty, molotow, on the run, krink), graffiti/tribal tees, dvds, and of course paint. all types of montana. I know i left stuff out, but that just goes to show that this store has good stuff.

Peter: 3rd Jun 2008 - 03:25 GMT

it is indeed a good store. many of their products are a bit on the pricy side ($10 for two ounces of , etc), but in all cases, you get a very good product, and you support a nyc graffiti institution of sorts, and you support your right to purchase art supplies without being a suspect... the paint isnt caged up, and they dont give you the third degree (quite the opposite) when you buy fat-tip drip markers and mops. i mean, i can get the same stuff from other writers or cheaper on some website, but i like ducking in there from time to time to pick up something specific (instant gratification is better than ordering from a website based in middle america), or to just see whats up. if youre into graffiti and happen to be around west broadway/canal, check it out. if nothing else, they do have some great art hanging in there.

cope 2: 11th Jun 2008 - 15:25 GMT

this store is the illest. i buy all my bombing supplies at this joint right here. its all about bombing the trains, remember that kids. 1

How come most of you can't spell, or tink itz mad kewlz to rite lik dis? You're probably wanna-bees from the suburbs.. Pay for paint what? I get on the LIRR or NJ Transit and go to the Sherman Williams or Mom and Pop store near your house and rack my paint.. I make my markers by diluting housepaint and putting it in spent markers and I rack my caps. I kitchen magic and liquitex caps that are like 20 years old. Real Graffiti is Real Counterculture, Scrap Yard and most of you are MTV Pop Culture trust fund kids. Real writers get creative in what they do, they were born and live in situations where they can't afford to buy paint. But that won't stop them.

Shut off your MTV and cookie cutter hip hop bullshit. Kill your idols, don't support big business and the media controlled crap they feed us. Real Graffiti is below the line, and should stay that way.

Make the the matrix and take the blue pill, open your eyes and see the world for what it is, and stop being little rich boy punks. That's not what counterculture is about, it's not what graf is about...

just be sure to dip if you see vs in front. they like casing that place and following writers out, so make sure you dont try out your new gear til you get home or something, haha. theyre usually fat, slovenly in appearance, wearing outdated styles and looking like they wandered in from the suburbs:

Hey, I used to work at Soho Zat back in 1983. I loved it. They only hired punks"

I worked there for only a few weeks....before that however i lived in the joint. skipped school and spent hours there. guy named daryl owned it? was that right? it was back in 85-86 and we used to hang out with a guy who's name escapes me at the moment but he was a cross between billy idol and a punked up David Spade....lol what great times...i remember the "window peace" living art display they had with two lesbians living in the stores window for a week or a month or something....man this brings me back

BLEST: the scrap yard should make an online store

chillen...: 5th Jan 2009 - 06:35 GMT

scrap yard is ok for when you need a quick marker or something, but just get on NJ transit and go 10 minutes over to jersey to a wal-mart or sherman williams or somewhere and steal you're stuff. paint thinner and rustoleum all day...

Peter: 9th Mar 2009 - 23:23 GMT

or, even better... rack your paint and buy krink/mops/mags/caps/etc from scrapyard. that way you support the movement and the local scene at the same time. you gotta give to get back, you know. support your local graf by painting and also buying shit from one of the few real graf stores in nyc...

Added to the ever growing list of places to visit when I get to NYC. Thanks for the info

Peter: 10th Mar 2009 - 01:24 GMT

to be fair, also check out alphabetanyc.com

is the original, but is official, so any writers passing through best not sleep, even if you *do* have to take the there...

so all yall heads, save up and spend money. sure, you can get it cheaper online, but when you shop at independent s you get instant gratification and youre paying your tithe to support the life in the place where it was birthed and to help support two internationally renowned graf stores.

For an old school graffiti marker made in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, go to www.nycmops.com We also supply stores both online and offline in the USA and around the world.

The scrap yard is one of the only real games in NYC. Back in the days the best place to cop graff stuff was on 99st and Brodway. It was called "Bombay." The store is still there, minus the graff stuff.

You get what you pay for at the Scrap Yard.......
