Diagonals & Verticals On The Waterfront

There's a whole sickening slew of a certain type of building on part of Seattle's waterfront. Looking at them, it's hard to tell if actual architects were hired to design them, or if they were designed by someone with a ruler and a few minutes spare time. One thing's for sure, they're solely intended to be big hollow blocks to sit in for the express purpose of looking at the waterfront.

It's as if the feature of having a view of Elliot Bay is so fantastic, no thought to any other aspect even need be considered. Aesthetic appeal, for example, was obviously not even on the list of priorities. Maybe the designers were thinking so hard about how much they should charge for such a view, they forgot the buildings themselves would be visible if you happened to be outside of them, looking not at the bay, but back at the city you lived in...

...and when you look back and see this landslide of non-adventurous geometry, it looks like there's nothing on shore to grab hold of. Just a blocky slope to slide and bump down on. A facade that would spit you out into the water.

If you switch your view a little, you see a forest of verticals...
