Governor's Island: Before the Slate Is Blank
[previous] :: [next]
Governor's Island is a relic of our city's long past, but it points firmly in the direction of the it's future.
The Southern Tier of the Island, made up of landfill from the construction, has been shut down and abandoned since the Coast Guard left in 1996.
The barracks, still standing, are the sole echo of the innocent good old days that a generation of Coast Guard families shared on the island.
But a new life looms large, if uncertain, over these empty acres.
There is a design competition being held this summer to decide between 5 "visions" for the island--plans that will take much revision to be more than just vision. Get a look at the plans at: www.pieaia.org/pie/projects/80/ or better yet, go to Governors Island and see the designs. Then take a tram tour and see these spaces for yourself. After all, NYers, they belong to you!
