the luminato festival (www.luminato.com) occurred in toronto from june 1st to the 10th. it followed in the footsteps of last summer's , an all-night event transplanted from paris.

i was out of town for many of the events, so i can't pass personal judgement on the festival, though it has provoked plenty of debate in publications like the toronto star over whether toronto's "live with culture" campaign has jumped the shark so soon. (www.thestar.com/News/article/223867) this campaign resulted from a broad consensus among torontonian movers and shakers that arts and culture events are a prime battleground in the fight for global city status.

i may have missed most of it, but i did manage to see "pulse front", a light display based at the harbourfront centre by montreal-based artist rafael lozano-hemmer, who is apparently in much demand. the exhibit consists of a series of 20 high-powered spotlights that track through the night sky, pulsating along with the heartbeat of whoever is holding on to a set of handlebars installed beside each light. the show has been held over until the 17th according to luminato's website. from my vantage point living at the edge of downtown, it has provided some intriguing action in the nighttime sky.

did you head down to see pulse front? what did you think? what did you think of luminato? can a city's culture be properly articulated by corporate interests?

ps. you can find plenty more (and better) photos of the exhibit at flickr.com/search/?q=luminato ... my camera wasn't quite up to the task.
