Old North St. Louis Pt. I

- maybetoday - Monday, May 14th, 2007 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

Old North St. Louis is one of my favorite neighborhoods in St. Louis (or anywhere) mainly because of the commitment that its community has to constantly making it a better place. ONSL suffered greatly to abandonment and decay. In the last few decades, people have been coming back to restore its buildings and its community. I went on the Old North St. Louis House and Community Tour on Saturday and got several pictures of the neighborhood.

When founded, the town of North St. Louis was founded to compete with St. Louis and possibly even become a larger port on the Mississippi River than St. Louis. North St. Louis became part of the City of St. Louis in 1841. The town became a haven for immigrants beginning with an influx of German and Irish immigrants, and later Italians, Polish, Russians, and free African-Americans.

Below is an excellent restoration from only two surviving walls.

The house on the left was used recently by New York Times as a symbol of St. Louis' depopulation. Looking a block north, you can see a couple excellent rehabs (a portion of one of them is pictured on the far right).

Crown Candy Kitchen has been a staple of ONSL since 1913.

wow. nice shots. a whole lot of these scenes minus the sunshine and the stupid-big cars could easily be mistaken for . Especially the abandoned terraced housing complete with local

Eric on St. Louis: Thanks for the compliments.

Great Photos. I wish that you had told the name of the streets these buildings were on. I was born in St. Louis and my grandmother lived at
11th and Montgomery. I lived with her for awhile and attended
St. Michael's School.

I love looking at the old neighborhood. I lived on Angelica right at 11th street. Anyone from the neighborhood drop me a line. I went to Holy Trinity and Central High E-mail me at paweeschmid@verizon.net
