The point I think a lot of you guys are missing is that the majority of taggers have just about no artistic ability. If they did, they'd be making a living at their "art". They certainly show no creativity. It's the same old crap, even with graffiti. What we have is a large group of guys who don't have the talent to make it as real artists trying to get recognition by writing their names all over public and private property. Crayon: im afraid you might be making some overblown (and rather novice) assumptions about the average graffiti writer's motivation. for many- especially these "taggers" you speak of- it has nothing at all to do with "artistic ability", "art" or "creativity". its more about "recognition".

im not sure the average graffiti writer's goal is to "make it as real artists", so that sort of makes a moot point of almost everything youre stating here. i think many just like seeing their name up somewhere, as well as getting a shred of recognition to go with it... and maybe a little rush or a thread of connection to something that is largely seen as underground, subversive and belonging to the people and the streets.

as for your pointedly overwrought generalization about "the english language"... i must add that it would be ignorant of you to assume that every graf writer is a talentless and illiterate. i know enough whose creative output are only eclipsed by their intellectual brilliance. several of them have been specific topics of discussion on this website.

Well Peter, I see the term "artist" being used quite a bit on this post in reference to taggers. I'm just going by this fact.

If the folks writing on this post are an indicator, I feel it is quite safe to assume a large portion of them quite "illiterate", and to use a quote from Writter as an example "fuck u austin they werent a couple of dip shits like u dum fuck come around hear and watch ur ass get fucked up". It's one thing to speak that way, quite another to have the time to type something out and still submit writing that idiotic.

From what I can gather, taggers (at least the ones posting here), are at best dim, at worst mildly retarded. Of course, as an optimist, I'd be happy to be proven wrong. Can any of you half-wits show more than a fifth grade education?

So i can very well understand why you firgure, that a fifth grade educationg is the top of the wall for some of use. I'm not a tagger, nor have i ever tagged someones property but my own. It's a form of art that is underground how ever. And is not hihly regrauded as a good thing to do. I my self do not agree with how they do it and I simply can't stand having to look at Ruen, tahoe, normel, or as well as crazy and balin. These guys who paint on the walls and overpasses, or what not are just punks with no life. If they devote so much time, so this crime. I love graffiti however and enjoy that kind of art work, but yes what these kids do is not art work it's a 8 year old with a spary can. I do draw, but in the confines of my desk and backbook, so avoid any dealings with the law.

I've seen the graff in hollywood and on the train cars near there. It's amazing the art these guys can pump out, i don't have time anymore to draw in my book. Yet it's nice to see that it still going strong. I guess i never really went out because. I knew if i went to jail i would stay there. Paint abandoned buildings, train tracks...there are tons of places to paint. Just look for 'em. Then make your public debut. Your on the right track.

There are two forms of fame in graff: Skill by piecing and skill in bombing. Choose your weapon. Alot of talented graff writers don't bomb. Alot of bombers can't piece. Master both and you'll be king.

I was popped for graff back in 96' and then again in 97' in MIA when a friend was killed standing next to me. So I understand the risks involved, trust me. So the safe route would be not to bomb. But I have to be honest and say that there is nothing more dope than waking up the next morning when the sun is up and passing by a get-up that you did the night before...looming over the public, just screaming for attention.

I miss those days.

Here's an idea: For every piece of property you vandalize by tagging, read a book. Not a magazine, but a book from the library. At least then, while you're fucking up people's property, you can at least educate yourselves somewhat.

i live in the wpb area, but i dont do alot of spray graff. mostly just stickers, you don't get caught with em as easily anyway, im just starting and mostly practice in abandoned places. there are so many abandoned areas esp around the downtown wpb area that cops dont really go around. they are all in fag cityplace or whatever.

Where do you go in downtown WPB? There used to be few abandoned buildings by dixie, but those have all been torn down. I think there's a few drama/normel/baler throw ups there. I've seen a few from MSG off clematis too.
