an echo of Montréal spiral staircasedom.

jack: that would be a great staircase in a home.

EvilGentleman: 2nd Apr 2007 - 14:44 GMT

It would be a barrel of fun in the home of a chronic drunk, just imagine how long they would spend climbing before giving up. I'm picturing a cross between a roller coaster and a hamster wheel.

CE: 2nd Apr 2007 - 16:09 GMT

Do you know when it was built and why? It's pretty neat though.

Frank S. Besner: 3rd Apr 2007 - 12:13 GMT

Well, the tubes remained silent about the details surrounding this sculpture but I am assuming (as I stated earlier) that it is very likely made to echo the spiral staircases that are so common in many bourough of the city, the gay village, where the sculpture is located, being one of them.

EvilGentleman: 3rd Apr 2007 - 13:14 GMT

The why would have to be art. The when, I have no clue. Frank, you seem to be artistically and architectually educated, any clue as to the name of it? And as far as the gay village goes, I took a bunch of pictures there on Sunday which I will get around to posting soon enough. I must admit, some of the bars in the village look pretty cool from the outside, so much so, in fact, that I am jealous that we straight people do not get such cool bars.

CE: 3rd Apr 2007 - 15:49 GMT

I've been to some of the bars in the Vollage and some of them are pretty cool. You don't have to be gay to go.

iman: 4th Apr 2007 - 00:19 GMT

thats cool man, i wonder if anyone has ever tried to walk it.

Frank S. Besner: 5th Apr 2007 - 11:35 GMT

Well I have scoured the interwebs and have finally come up with the info, via the wonderfully informative www.metrodemontreal.com. As it turns out, the sculpture bears the rather apt title "Revolutions" was constructed on site in 2003 by the artist Michael DeBroin. It was, as suspected intend to mimic the archetypical Montréal spiral staircase but was meant to remind us also of the nearby Cartier Bridge and the structures of LaRonde on Ile Saint-Hélène.

So there you have it.

Frank S. Besner: 5th Apr 2007 - 11:47 GMT

Oh By the way, Evil. You picture is MUCH better than the other one I've seen up on the net.
Maybe it's time somebody spruced up the wikipedia metro station entries with a few pictures of the curiosities that lie in the streets surrounding them?

EvilGentleman: 5th Apr 2007 - 15:26 GMT

Thanks, Frank. I haven't done any Wiki updates in a bit, maybe I should add some of my own content.
