Summer Dreaming
[previous] :: [next]
the beach in winter. how i long for the summer winds. my friend tom and i would go to jones beach or to fire island in the summer and we would bring along his little cousin and tom and i would set up the chairs and small table with the chess board on top, we kept the cooler of gin and tonic under the chair with the hero's from sheepshead bay. we would play chess all day, listening to frank sinatra sing the summer wind and at the end of the day we would walk by the shore looking for a shapely, tall, blonde with that california look, yeah, you guys know what i'm talking about, california dreaming, blue eyed blonde, long hair, tanned skin, shapely, very shapely, very,very,very,very you know, when we would spot the california girl i would make the intro because tom was shy and then i would introduce tom to her and tom would get a date. now, i wasn't to concerned about girls looks, to me all girls were pretty and kissable. so tom was happy, i was happy for tom, his little cousin was happy with the hot dog and coke, and as the sun lingered and dipped over the horizon we would go home and play some pool at spookies pool room on coney island avenue in brooklyn and then out to meet the girls at the inner circle on the upper east side. then home to mommies house to get some sleep. the last time i saw tom was in the hospital and he was dying and as i came into his room channel 4 news was playing that song the summer wind by sinatra because it was the first day of summer, tom and i laughed. what a life, california dreaming.
