I've been browsing through various blogs about Bushwick and noticed that you teach there. Do you have any advice as to how to get started working in the schools? I'm a studio arts major with a decent math and science course background and very interested in social justice/community activism issues. I would love to teach or find a job (I graduate this May) working with students somehow. upfromflames: 13th Mar 2007 - 02:52 GMTsure did. I always credit others. Bushwick needs teachers, but most of all it needs teachers that came from here. They understand most what kids need here. There is always a place open for a person like yourself. There are numerous schools based on the concept and practice of social justice. EBC (Eastern Brooklyn Congregations) and Make the Road by Walking both lead schools, as well as ACORN and BCUE, Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment. Whereas earlier Bushwick High School--at one time the worst the in the US loomed over the neighborhood as a cruel monopoly , now there is a variety of small schools that can better deal with students needs. That makes a big difference. Google some of those names, and you'll find the right school your needs.
ArtsyNani: 13th Mar 2007 - 03:19 GMTI'm familiar with the schools ... I guess I need to just start my research as to available positions ... thanks RickC: 3rd Jun 2007 - 03:45 GMTI thought the chicken place was on Myrtle between Linden and Gates. It has been there since I was a child over 40 years. RickC: 3rd Jun 2007 - 03:49 GMTThe way to get started is to get involved with a school that you think you would want to be employed at. Then go to the Board of Ed, see if you have the qualifications to be a teacher. If not, you might be able to be a per deim teacher (substitute teacher). In time if there is an openning the pincipal may try to get you on board as a full time teacher. FYI, Subs get lots of work.
