To Thunder Bay

a man sits in front of me on the bus to thunder bay. he speaks with a southern drawl to an old lady who has sat beside him. he has come from the united states. they talk about homes, the old lady mentions many ex husbands and dead friends.

the old lady departs.

the man sits alone.

now he wears his glasses. a plastic brace supports his ankle which sits on his other knee. a bible sits in his lap. a plastic bracelet is on his wrist, imprinted in it are the words "prayer warrior". a highlighter is in his hand, marking passages from genesis. above him on the television screen gene hackman punches a woman in the face.

the woman reaches for a letter opener.

the man turns the page of his bible, resets his beatitudes bookmark in the gutter and continues to highlight passages.

gene hackman is stabbed in the arm.

the man lays down his bible. with his laptop he writes an email full of love to a canadian woman he is coming to meet for the first time.
