Some Oslo Streetart

- Osloman20plus - Sunday, November 12th, 2006 : goo

, ,

Ok I found a series of streetart pictures from Oslo, and I felt I needed to post them to get a little variation from the few other posts on Oslo available here.. Oslo actually deserves a little more pictures than what is here right now.

Here's the pictures, note, they were NOT shot by me, look to bottom for more info...

image 17125image 17126
1st image shows a building in the area where all these pictures where taken, which is around the well known "city river" of Oslo, by the name of Akerselva. Akerselva is a rather small and intimate river, but still had importance for the beginnings of norwegian industrialization from around the 1850's onwards.

image 17127image 17128
This street-art is centered around the small pedestrian streets and alleys around the club "Blå," which translates to blue. Picture on the right is in the yard of the club, which has outdoor serving in the summer. On the right, Akerselva (Akers river) flows by.

image 17129image 17130

image 17131image 17132
On the left pic, you can make out the rather funny outdoor chandelier. This area is much more heavily adorned with streetart and other "random" art inventions than most other parts of Oslo. In the beginning, this attracted the people who saw themselves as special, and probably some "radical" types too - but now, it's more of a trendy spot, than anything else, and consequently, the "freaks" have "left the building" for greener pastures (mostly) :).

On the right, you see a plate (the blue one) which reflects the industrial past of this area. There is little in the way of industry left, but apart from "Blå" the club, there is a concert venue close by called "Fabrikken" - the factory. Most of the old buildings still stand, but the uses have changed.

image 17137image 17138
Oslo used to have a lively graff subculture, which still has a certain strength, but the popularity of it has died down somewhat - in the early/mid-nineties, Oslo could be ranked among some of the most heavily "tagged" down cities in Europe(at least considering its size)! But this is no longer the case. It still hosts a few class writers/graffers, and about "one hands worth" of world class or near-world-class graffers. On the right, you can see the name of the alleyway, which is "Ingens gate" - this translates to "nobodys street."

image 17141image 17142

image 17143image 17144
The image with part of the Akerselva river, above, shows a small part of the alternative culture house, called "Hausmania." Band practice rooms and other activities abound there. They sort-of fight with the city authorities for their continued existance, as it is a kind of counter-culture "base" so to speak (and the buildings are rather shabby).

image 17145image 17147
The street-art "inventive/pun" part of graffiti was long neglected here, but in recent years, our taggers and graffers have picked up on this trend.

image 17150
The plaque says, loosely translated: this wall is temporarily suspended as a "location" for photos of ministries of culture/culture workers/personalities etcetera. - - Institute Against Visual Simplification (IBVT). It is a sort of joke, of course, and a result of exactly what it opposes - "establishment" people taking these visuals as their own to make them "contemporary" or something like that...

Thanks so much for posting these! Great shots!

colavitos ghost: holy fuck. amazing. i'm going to oslo.

noone: 16th Nov 2006 - 19:00 GMT

this place is crazy! is graffiti legal here? this shits nutable

PsychoFreud: 17th Nov 2006 - 07:55 GMT

most of the pictures above are actually taken within a couple of blocks. The rest of the city doesnt have
quite the same quality when it comes to grafitti. The majority of people are just tagging their names
all over town.

Osloman20plus: 19th Nov 2006 - 22:01 GMT

yeah true enough psychofreud. its all within a pretty small area, where
it's been more or less accepted.

but theres some good stuff thats been removed in the last few years, here
and there you can find some nice ones, but like i said, the authorities been
removing things a lot more aggressively these last few years. truth is, that 'promotes' quick and sloppy tagging instead of more elaborate stuff...

Tyler: Nice.... Really funny bombs

Cicilie: 21st Dec 2006 - 13:30 GMT

Cool to see my photos here, and that people are appreciating the great street art :)

archie: 28th Jan 2007 - 00:03 GMT

man i wish i found this amazing shit when i was in oslo, must be hard to find. immense pecing

PsychoFreud: 25th Jun 2007 - 13:31 GMT

It's not hard to find. :) If you go to Oslo, just ask someone to point you the direction of the club "Blå" (meaning Blue),
and also Hausmania which is right next to it. You will find most of it there.

puffmagik: 23rd Oct 2007 - 10:42 GMT

grunerløkka, oslo is the last remaining part of independant art in norway. sad....

Osloman20plus: 6th Feb 2008 - 08:26 GMT

Now there's a little new streetart in those same places! see:

hey, flickr's not a dirty word round here. we ♥ flickr

Osloman20plus: 15th Nov 2008 - 04:27 GMT

If you liked the streetart, you gotta check out this wall (below) which is quite close to all the other pics here, but still a bit off from the two streets that are mainly pictured here (well, it's really around the corner).

The pieces/burners in this pic are located on the wall of Hausmania, which was originally some illegally occupied buildings but has now become a "free" and unregulated alternative culture house.

visited Olso over the summer: 24th Dec 2008 - 16:53 GMT

Does anyone know who panted the bunny-like creature with the hands reaching out(photo is not shown on this page) in the alley where the chandeleir is. Almost right across from that pink fish,on the opposite wall. Are all of these tags just random? Or is there one or two main artists that did the work here?

From my father's archives. These photos are part of a series: I've displayed them elsewhere, but I thought it might be nice to post them here once, for y'all to see. This is part of an ongoing slide scanning project....
