this is not new in amsterdam, as i am researching book plates from the 1600s with views of the city at that time and there seemd to bee public urnals throught the city.

you don't need to buy a special pee funnel, if you are a girl and you want to avoid sitting on public loo seats i have heard tell that a 'pringles' lid curled round does the job! (i haven't tried it, because i am mainly howard hughesy about my hands, and i don't mind sitting down on a public loo, and i don't go to festivals)

I see from the design of these public urinals that actually, unless the guy was extremely well-endowed, thus causing him to pee from a few steps further back than usual, all the person walking past will see is the backside of the guy, without actually seeing any private parts or the like. Ingenious design, wish they had them here. Can't begin to tell you how many times I would have found these handy, especially since almost every washroom in this city is either reserved for the clientele only or located in a private residence.

Not sure how it works in Europe, but I am certain that over here in Detroit punks would urinate all over the thing, not just into the hole, thus rending the entire surface sticky and disgusting, and I would not want to get near it.

We have them here in London now as well - I've used them many times especially after a night out when public toilets are locked. They're easy to use and most guys seem to hit the hole (no pools of pee around them)

Gals don't actually need a funnel or other aplliances to pee while standing, although a portable kitchen funnel will do the trick, too. Otherwise, they can stand with feet 18" apart, "open it up" and ready, aim, fire! It works, but aiming the stream is not as accurate as with male equipment (which is also known to miss the mark).

I find these urinals so much better than in Paris. It costs 1 franc to use an inclosed toilet located on the street, but a lot of Frenchies find it easier (and cheaper)to urinate against any convienient wall, and let it run down the sidewalk to the gutter by the curb. GROSS!!!!!! One of the dirtiest places in Europe.

When I was in Vietnam w/ the Army years ago we had what they called piss tubes on our compound. It was a corrugated steel tube about 18" diameter covered w/ screen material. It was sunk in the ground and had a waist high barricade on one side. Took some to but saved time running to a latrine. Only problem was Vietnamese folks would sometimes come up and look to see what size you were!! That you never got used to !

these type accomadations are nothing "new" in Amsterdam, or any large city in Holland, the older ones are a multi urinal screen barracade type you walk into and use, with only the head and feet visable. Paris as said has the enclosed self cleaning type, (same as were tried in San Francisco) for .25 cents (may have gone up by now) you go in and when done it locks up and totally robotically cleans itself up for the next use!!! those are the best around and should be in every large city where bathrooms are an issue?? i find nothing wrong or disgusting with any of the examples shown, only in America do we have "issues" with these things... its no wonder there are so many ill people in the states as we seem to have trouble allowing are little darling children deal with the plain facts of life at least until we consider them adults or 18 or sometimes not even then? face it, Europe has been around for a long time and is a mature culture, we here are still in our infancy as a country and culture. anything to do with normal bodily functions are considered indecent and off limits to discussion or education...i.e. sexual education equals teen pregnancy and STD's rather than to educate our children about any of that. There is a well know furniture store in Natick, Massachusetts called Jordan's. They have an IMAX theater in it and the ladies room there has the two way police glass and you don't notice it until you sit down. It is SO funny when someone goes in there the first time!!!

The design of these is interesting but even if I were a guy I would like a bit more privacy, not to mention that others don't really want to watch or end up on UTUBE!!!

When I was a kid I asked my father who was a doctor whether it was important to wash one's hands after urinating. He replied that urine does not carry disease causing organisms. Urine is just eliminating waste materials from the body such as urea. Feces, of course are a different matter.

I think those devices used on the streets of some European cities make a lot of sense.

Also, I see nothing wrong in two guys or two women kissing. Grow up. Get over it! Europeans are generally much more sensible regarding this subject as well. We are such prudes in the United States!

I am a military brat who was born in Japan. My early years were spent in public bath houses, and not the type you hear about in San Fransisco. This is where you soak in a big bathtub made for twenty. Men and women bathed in the same waters, after showering of course, but it was natural. If you had to pee you went. If America were not so sexualy orienated this would be seen as natural and not "gross", or "OMG don't let the children see". We were meant to be nude. The fact that other countries accomodate the urge to pee is great. Get over yourselves! I have lived in Europe, Amsterdam specifically, and over there people are not so prissy. Peeing is part of life. Penises are part of every guy. Trust me, no one there thinks you or your penis are special enough to gawk at while you pee. The pissuers are tacky for sure, but they are better than nothing, and the ancient city center is crowded and there is always some guy who is ready to pee anywhere, so it is best that the pissuers are there, I think. In some places, especially further south in Europe, you will notice that some buildings have a sheet of metal against an outside wall. That is there for men to piss against. Gross yes, but better than random peeing everywhere. I saw these in {New Zealand{ too. More popular there is the open trough. That is another story for another day I, suppose.

these public urinals are a solution for late night drinkers at the weekend in our town centre they are set up at about 8pm when most children arent even in town and its getting dark anyway. public toilets close at 6pm and they are very easy to use as long as you can still stand up they are placed in obvious sight so men will see them and use them instead of soiling the streets its no big deal just seems like a lot of people are shocked as if guys peeing is offensive will all do it its a natural bodily function we live in the 21st century and this should not offend anybody.

I just returned from Amsterdam. I visited during the US Thanksgiving. I am a typical american male. Frankly, these things are great. Most of the travel in the city is done on foot or on bike. Thus, lots more time spent outside with a full bladder (if you were at the pub and left before your 15 minute walk home, etc. Yes, some child may know that you are in the bathroom, but they are not going to see your dork (they hide all well enough). If Dutch parents are concerned that their child will see or hear, they will cross the street away from the urinal. That simple. For those that asked about #2, if you cannot hold that till you get home from the pub or wherever you should see a Dr. The urinals are not designed for #2. It is shame that the women cannot use these without more embarrassment or getting wet. I know some females have indicated that they sure would like to use one of these if they were just a bit more private (current designs are not really made for women turning around and squatting. The female bits would be exposed to other users or the public; depending on the design). The paper funnel proposed by one user would work as long as the female is okay exposing the exposed rear-end to another user or the neighborhood (the green and concrete versions hold two men facing in the opposite direction).

I have been to many festival/street fairs where guys just whip it out even standing in a crowd and go where they are, rather than have to find the bank of port-o-lets and wait for the girls who are desperately trying to pee without having any part of their anatomy, or belongings touch any part of the port-o-let (which of course takes 3x as long). Something like these, strategically placed would really help, I think. When i was 11 my father worked for the US government in Germany.
I was raised naturist and in Germany my family went to many naturist/fkk beaches lakes areas.

I don't understand all the American bashing going on. All countries are entitled to their own etiquette and customs. I have been to Europe including Amsterdam recently and I didn't see any of the urinals in question, however, I would not of used one regardless for any reason. I don't understand how having men urinate in broad daylight on busy streets is preferable in any way than discreetly going into a back alley away from the general public. Bodily functions are natural but also gross (smelly/bacteria) and if the purpose is to eliminate urine in the streets then why not simply build more public restrooms or pass legislation requiring that cafes, etc. make their restrooms accessible to the public. After all many of these business get tax breaks from the city and government. It is fine that there is communal bathing in Japan, age of consent 15 years in Mexico, and street urinals in Amsterdam because that is their choice. I am also entitled to the customs of my country without making an apology to anyone. It is easy for countries with populations under 10 million to criticize a country of 300 million.

I've seen these in a few cities; they're removed each morning to be emptied and cleaned, and returned to the street in the evening. There's another type which is permanently installed, and lowers down into the pavement during the day. I've only ever used them a few times, mainly because I'm seldom out on the streets at night where they are. It would be useful to have one in Sheffield when I have a three hour wait for the overnight coach back to London at about 1:30 in the morning a couple of times each year.

As somebody else has said, these can be used by women, at least when wearing a dress or skirt. I have seen women using them a couple of times, and the first time I saw, and used, one there was a young lady using the position next to me. What's the problem? You can't see anything, and even if you could I doubt that many people would be terribly interested in watching you urinate.

People who are out at night don't suddenly lose the need to urinate when normal daytime facilities close. There should be more of these things.
