I went to high school with Sane (aka David Smith) the rumor was that they found his body in the Hudson river. If you are really interested in Sane's stuff you should get your hands on some Hunter College High School yearbooks circa 1987/1988. He covered the schools yard for years and tons pics are in those books. He as was a very smart kid. Everyone else went to the ivy league and the last time I spoke to him, he said he was going to get a job with the mta. Ha, ha....

I was just back in New York. I grew up there but haven't been back since 92. I too remember SANE and SMITH like everywhere in New York. It's sad because now the only place where you can see SANE/SMITH is if you stand in the first car of the subways and look out the front window. If you look out the window their tags are all still over the walls in the dark tunnels in between the subway stops. A TRUE LEGEND. R.I.P.

From what I've heard, Sane committed suicide, because his graf writing was going to get his Dad, who was a Harvard Professor, sued for like $1million. As for Sane's older brother, Smith, he still writes, and is now married to Lady Pink, the female writer who starred in the seminal Hip hop movie 'Wildstyle'. i just googled sane smith and came across this forum. sane - david smith - was my boyfriend when we were in high school. he died by committing suicide (he jumped off a bridge). it was no surprise to the few of us who knew him well. yes, his brother still writes smith and is married to lady pink. if you're looking for stuff to read about david, there's a chapter about him in "the mole people" and also in "the art of getting over" and various other garffiti books have photos of pieces of his. he died in 1990 so they are getting rarer.

Hey Mee, I only really heard the story of Sane a few months ago. I'm a big graffiti fan, but lately, I've been realising that it's actually been the cause of a lot of misery in people's lives, e.g. fines, prison, electrocution, and even damage to internal organs, caused by years of inhaling paint fumes. Sane may have died over 15 years ago, but people are still talking about him on graffiti forums to this day.

By the way, how old was he when he died?

He was 20 when he died. I go to hunter right now and there are teachers who knew him pretty well. The year books are in the library I'm gonna check that out. As a young kid living in Jersey (Teaneck) my family used to go into the city on weekends to visit our family in Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. I remember looking out the window of the car and seeing "SANE SMITH" everywhere, all over the Hudson River Drive, Just everywhere! I didn't know him at all but I used to Imagine what he was like. I live out west now but recently went back and was disappointed that I didn't see his work all over the place. I'm gonna miss it. It's one of those things that I vividly remember about my living in the area.

There's also a SANE piece in the backyard at ABC No Rio on the lower east side (MN).
SANE was in a few art shows at ABC during the 1980s. The piece is an american flag
with the caption "Baseball, Apple Pie and Racism". Over the years the "Racism" got
faded and some dipshits defaced what they probably thought was a nationalist piece.
Luckily SMITH came back and restored his brother's work a few years ago. Here's a link

I did a paper on graf years ago back in the late 90's and I had all sorts of old articles about him. My brother use to be down with 5x7 and XTW back in the day and i remember him telling me the story about how sane was taggin up on the gw brigde and a cop threw him off the brigde. on my way to queens theres a amtrak railroad brigde where there was a sane tag and now some dick head tagged over it. I'm not a tag artist but like many who grew up in NY, I too would see his tags all over the place. I have a really weird story. Kinda long but worth it . I left New York back in 93 and moved to Seattle. Had a hard time at first and was really looking for a sign to give me a reason to stay. I was at work at a dive bar and someone left a copy of Rolling Stone Magazine. One of the sub articles was on Graffitti Artists so I picked it up and read in the article that SANE had died. Funny thing was, I had never met the boy and yet I felt really sad, like I knew him or had some kind of connection to him. I don't know how much time had passed but one day I was just feeling lost and not sure where I was going in life or if I made the right decision to move to Seattle and WHAM! I'm cleaning off a table and picking up my tips and some left me a buck. On that dollar had SANE,SMITH on the front side and on the back it has JA.XTC. . I was like, DAMN, what are the odds that a dollar with SANE,SMITH TAG, found me clear crosscountry in Seattle. I still have the dollar today and had it framed. The other weird thing was I was at the Barnes and Noble like 3 yrs ago in the Art section cause I still Paint and draw myself . Was looking for a particular book and I saw this book that had the last name Powers on it, thats my last name so I pick it up and wouldn't ya know it it was a book on Graffitti and I open it right up to the section on SANE/SMITH. TOO SPOOKY I KNOW. It was cool though cause I always wanted to know who these two strangers were that kept coming into my life and now I know a little bit more. I would like to tell Smith how special he and his brother have been in my life for reasons too extensive to get into and to hope he has a great life and wish he and his family well. One more thing, was driving on the freeway the other day and looked up on the overpass and saw A TAG SANE. I guess there is a Sane in Seattle now. THere will only ever be one true SANE. RIP

for some reason woke up yesterday thinking way back to high school and graffiti/symbols of that time which included the flipped glass of ‘missing foundation’ and other things...started googling and found this site...back then as a kid my family would come over the GW for weekend trips...smith had painted a green grasshopper on one of the lower sections of the bridge and then as you got onto the HH going south, each one of the pillars for that building on the left had a different colorful letter of SANE/SMITH painted on it...then at the mouth of the metro north tunnel you could see them again...those guys were everywhere and really clever...humorous too...i remember being blown away by the sheer coverage even though i never painted or knew who they were...just some jersey kid staring out the back window of his dad’s car...really ambitious guys taking something to the next level and you have to give them props for that...also for doing something that people remember for years and years...you could see them all the way up in the bronx, down in the village, i even saw a tag out on some backstreet in queens many years later, not to mention all over inside the subway tunnels...supposedly you could also see a tag in a michael jackson video...then there were all these rumors about the mayor being p’d off because they painted the bkln bridge...i see from the article above that this was in fact true...once met a dude who said he knew smith from fordham or something and that he would always go out late at night to paint...supposedly one time his desk in the dorm room caught fire or something like that...anyway, glad to see in some strange way this is still being kept alive...JA and REVS were also big and get mad props!!!

JA - Min must've had maaaad stories to tell you. I've heard he became all-city king, in the years after 'Style Wars' was filmed. Most people from outside of New York don't know about that, as the mid-80s scene wasn't really documented, like the 70s and early 80s were. I'm from England, by the way, and I only heard about Min's mid-80s achievements after going to www.saster.net last year.

A friend of mine told me SANE jumped off the Hellgate in Astoria. How that could happen and have him found in the Hudson would be odd since Hellgate is on the East River. He could have been found downtown though. I have a feeling my friend was rehashing bad info.

I went to hunter, and was still in the elementary school(in the same building) through SANEs time at the high school.
i remember playing handball, football, manhunt, etc. on graf-filled courts.
My question is--i remember there was a big "class of 88'" piece(I think it was 88) on the wall when SANE graduated.
I think it might have also said congratulations or way to go' or some shit like that. Does anyone have pics of that?

At the top of the World trade centre, not much bigger that this text on the screen.I did have his phone number from a Writer in London. I did phone but could not get hold of him. Other SANE Graf I remember, At 14th st Union Square very high up. Koch SANESMITH and crew cheated on you? From JFK to Manhattan might have been in Queens? It was on the outside of an elevated subway station. Another when I was on way to Long Island on a bridge. I was in Germany October? 1990 at Loomits place when he had a phone call from New York with the bad news that David SANE Smith had passed away. I was back in Nyc in 1991 but cant remember seein much then. In Nyc 1993 I took photos of every bit SANE Graf that I saw. I wrote an Article-short story called Impressions of a name for an English Graf mag about how much of an influence SANE had on me with not only the styles but a master of Graf Placement. I also like JA, Ghost, Ris mob, Xtc and Realy old stuf.THe first ever pices. Like some of the Priest pieces on the Subway Rescources website. I like the Rolling stones mag Article too. The late A-one put me down with TDT in 1989. I hope to get back over to Nyc one day, ineed to do some more subs.Always good to see SANE pictures ive not seen before and there are only two on this site ive seen. Im off.

My English teacher recently told me about Sane Smith - he said he fell off the Brooklyn Bridge, not the Hellsgate Bridge.
I think I'll look around for that little piece of Hunter High School art. I don't recall ever seeing it, 'cause maybe they painted it over.

I too was born and raised in Washington Heights and I can remember as a kid coming up seeing Sane Smith all over the place.
I remember seeing them all over Ghost Town, the abandoned 91st St. station on the no. 1 train between 96th St. and 86th St. stations.
All along the Henry Hudson Hwy. aka the West-side Hwy.
Wow, you all took me back on a trip down memory lane when I was a kid.

When I was young, I had a 2 hour commute everyday - we didn't have ipods, psps, game boys and all the technology kids have today. So my only form entertainment was looking at all the graff. I was young at the time but was amazed by it. The time flew by and it never seemed like it was 2 hours. Starting from 242nd on the 1 and 9 lines all the way to 69th on the 7 line (well much further then that but that was my stop lol). Sane and Smith every where you looked. DR.SEUSS and Ghost were sick too and JA was every where most dissed by toys most hated lmao.

Those were the good old days.

I hate that they cleaned up all the trains and the stations they were as New York as the Twin Towers the Empire States building and Statute Of liberty. Land of the free my ass! Tell that to Vandal Squad. I love that JA and Smith keeps Sane's memory alive. ACC has been doing the same with MSone R.I.P seems like hes up more now then ever...

“So, you wish to learn more about the myths surrounding SaneSmith?
Well, the graffiti culture is strongly based on oral history so not everything can be learned by reading, but I will enlighten you a bit. Like many kids, Sane and Smith were born into a family without much parental supervision and with a simple sibling rivalry. By the time we were in our mid-teens, we were left to explore the city and both took an interest in graffiti, fuelled by our friends’ graffiti involvement as well. So by telling each other, ‘Yo, I got up here’ or ‘I did a piece there’ the other brother would have to get up as well. Any graffiti writer with a great partner will tell you that a small bit of competitiveness can inspire great feats. That soon led to each of us finding spots to paint and informing each other and having an instant partner to bolster one’s courage to actually go out and paint. As I was the elder brother, I had more time to wander around after dark but that left my younger brother more time to practice doing pieces on paper. That quickly showed in our work as Sane became more skilled and Smith was tagged across the city. Back in the mid-80s, we didn’t have any mentors so everything was trial and error. Somehow it seemed to work since in just two years of hard work we received a visit from the head of the Vandal Squad. He wanted to persuade my hardworking mother to stop us. But how many knuckleheaded teenagers listen to their moms? So then we painted one bridge too many…

“On reflection, painting a monument such as the Brooklyn Bridge was probably a bad idea since we were unprepared for the consequences. Around that time, we had been painting a couple of the other bridges around New York and thought it would be just another spot. By this time we had been using bucket paint a lot instead of spray paint since it was easy to acquire, custom colourable and so much thicker that the colour just boomed. One day, Sane said ‘Yo, I got this spot in mind. I scoped it. It looks easy enough, so let’s do it. There’s this ladder and a ledge just wide enough…’ The next morning we looked at our handiwork on both sides of the bridge, smiled and took our photos. A few days later a newspaper reporter called our house and informed us of the enormity of the deed. Then came a couple of calls by the news media. Sane, the more verbose brother, did an interview with one TV crew, feeling that we should stand up and let our intentions be known. It came out as a sound bite and we saw the futility of trying to get our meanings across in televised media. The writers that we knew were surprised that we should be given this kind of attention and we received many calls of congratulations. We were all used to being called punks in the media and mentioned whenever a politician wanted some attention for a war on graffiti and a better chance at being elected. A short time later the city sent us a letter informing us that we owed some money for the clean up. Although we could only ignore that letter, sure enough a messenger came to the house and served us papers saying that the city was suing us, our mother and our best partner, JA, for damages done to the city. Luckily, a famous lawyer, William Kunstler, decided to take our case and somehow the city lost its will to pursue the matter. We wound up moving out to avoid all the unwanted police attention, and the bridge got painted a second time the following year. I guess no one learned their lesson.

“Over the years, many tactics have been attempted by the authorities to stamp out graffiti. As time goes by, it seems that the government is getting more authoritarian and removing whatever freedoms they can from the people. Expressing yourself with a spray can is no longer tolerated with a slap on the wrist. In our neighbourhood, it used to be every little kid grabbed for a simple graffiti tag was yelled at, slapped around, sprayed in the face or grilled about his peers by the police. We would then hear the stories of how the cops wanted to arrest us, or other police tactics, from friends that would get arrested. One amusing story from our pal JA was when he encountered a SaneSmith tag in the urinal of the police department a short time after I went through the system (taken with only smudges from the fingerprint ink left on my fingers, the police weren’t too pleased to tell JA). Although we were on top of a most wanted list for many years, most of the arrests we went through were for minor charges and dealt with somewhat casually as young men would. A few times we were slapped around while in custody but minorities definitely had it tougher. The opposite was true whenever we stepped into a train yard. Instead of having to be the tough white boys that got into a fight whenever needed, we simply got up all city as much as possible. We gave a lot of respect and got a lot of respect over the years. Our heroes weren’t in the movies, they were writers walking around the neighborhoods just a little older than us. It is hard to describe to normal people what it means to meet these graffiti legends and have them know who you are merely by reading the writing on the walls.

“Nowadays, the culture has really changed. The commoditisation of graffiti in the galleries led to a major talent drain from the subways. By the time we started there were a lot fewer writers willing to mentor a rising new jack. It is gratifying to see the skill level at a point that it is taken seriously as an art form in the galleries and in street art publications, but it is condemning all those with lesser skill levels to be hunted down. Those unwilling to be artsy or play by the rules are facing extreme anti-graffiti measures by the authorities. Banksy is a famous example of a former graffiti writer that has matured to a point that his work is hailed as great art. I respect him greatly for his wit and cheekiness but I fail to see how his work is part of graffiti. Maybe this is the face of graffiti in the future and all tagging will be reduced to pre-teen crayon scribbles. I myself have married and luckily earn a living with my painting skills. My wife Lady Pink and I have been ‘playing the game’ for some years now to pay the bills but we try to keep our spirits true by painting legally in the street every now and then. And if you happen upon a SaneSmith tag scrawled somewhere where it shouldn’t be, I didn’t do it…”

RIP David Smith aka Sane. David was my friend at HCHS. He painted the wall of my bedroom at home. I graduated HS in 89. David committed suicide when i was in my second year of college. so it would have had to e either 90 or 91. He was super smart and talented, and good friend. but he was also self-destructive. he used to tell me stories about lying down in the drain in the tracks and letting subway trains go over him. i never knew if it was true, but it's crazy either way. i was so angry and sad when he died. he had just started to show in galleries and get some recognition of his talents. when i came back from college, i took down the wall from my bedroom and took it with me to new apartments for years. first in chelsea, and then in brooklyn. it was three 4x8 panels of sheetrock with 2x4s supporting it. if i find the picture i have of it, i'll post it. sadly, when i moved from brooklyn i left it behind. it was probably trashed by my landlord. i have some pieces he did on paper somewhere too. glad i still have something he did. i miss that kid. much love, david.
