the sign in the second one makes the weir sound like an amusement park thrill ride.

zagg: 17th Oct 2006 - 21:58 GMT

Submerged Weir? Mike Weir? golfing? what?

Ah good times.

Susannah: Reminds me of a Keith Haring tag.

an amusement park thrill ride of death! i continue to laugh at how very blunt this sign is. and i love the fact they call it the drowning machine...

the graphic makes it look like a puzzle you might be tempted to try and solve, or a relationship problem you might like to bring to terminal completion...

all low head dams are called "drowning machines" because you cannot escape them and they are the perfect "machine" for killing people. That one looks particularly nasty.

that looks sweet nice little swallow to surf... i think i will attempt to surf the drowning machine. just kidding that actually gave me a shiver thinking of being trapped in the jowls of this traumatising beast.

ya something like 29 people have died on it in the last couple years. im in a band called anonymous and our album will be called the drowning machine and the cover will feature the diagram from the sign. the city f Calgary started to renovate it to make it not so dangerous, but they ran out of money so now theres no water flowing over it so its not generating electricity and they tore up the surrounding area prety bad... it looks horible. why they made it in the first place i have no idea

ManiacMac596: 24th Apr 2009 - 22:10 GMT

ill upload a photo of how it looks now asap.

SomeGuy007: 28th Apr 2009 - 00:56 GMT

ManiacMac596, the weir was built to divert water in to the irrigation canal system. Hopefully they can start the project up again and finish what they started.

Call me old-fashioned... but I prefer the traditional hand-crafted drownings as opposed to the impersonal machine-made ones...
