From today's Brooklyn Daily Eagle...
"On November 15, 1977 the Williamsburgh Savings Bank...was declared a landmark. It was designed by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer in 1927. They chose a Romanesque style for the 512-foot high structure with a mervelous quasi-Moorish dome above a four-faced clock, 27 feet in diameter, the world's largest at the time until the Allen Bradley Building in Milwaukee was in built in 1962...An up-close view at the grotesquely large hands and illuminated numbers from the tower's observatin deck is a worthwhiel and surrealistic experience. An outdoor viewing space is accessible after a change of elevators.
The interior lobby and bank hall contain 22 varieties of marble, mosaic ceilings, murals and metalwork that are among the most beautiful in Brooklyn. The lobby is divided into a series of groin vaults covered with blue mosaics highlighted with gold stars. The doors leading into the banking hall are ornamented with figures in metal by Rene Chambellan representing the working men who might deposit their savings in the bank."
